Yahoo is apparently eyeing Sarpy County for one of its data centers, which would house computer servers to run the company’s search engines.
State Tax Commissioner Doug Ewald said the Internet search company filed an application earlier this month for tax incentives under the Nebraska Super Advantage program, which is a bigger-league version of the state’s business tax incentives plan.
Ewald said Yahoo listed the minimums of 50 jobs and $100 million needed to qualify for the Super Advantage incentives, but he said it is “not uncommon” for companies’ actual jobs and investment to exceed those minimums.
Based on other data centers being built in Iowa, Yahoo’s investment would likely be much larger.
Google is spending $600 million to build a data center in Council Bluffs and Microsoft is spending $500 million on a data center in the Des Moines area.
Ewald said Yahoo listed La Vista as the location, though he declined to say whether the company listed a specific site.
To qualify for wage credits under the Super Advantage program, companies must pay 150 percent of the state average wage or 200 percent of the county average wage, whichever is higher.
That means the average wage Yahoo would have to pay in Sarpy county would be $68,700 Ewald said.
Yahoo spokesman Denis Roy declined to comment on the company's plans, the Associated Press reported.
