A Michigan company is seeking an air-quality permit for a 135 million-gallon ethanol plant it plans to build in Phelps County.

Alcorn Energy LLC of Troy, Mich., and Phelps County Development Corp. said the plant will be built on 200 acres about nine miles northwest of Holdrege along Nebraska Highway 23.

The plant will employ 40-50 people and process about 40 million bushels of corn a year, Alcorn officials said. The 14- to 16-month construction could begin after the permit is obtained, which is expected to take four to six months.

In April, Phelps County Ethanol, a subsidiary of Midwest Ethanol Producers of O’Neill, said it will build an ethanol plant 2½ miles southwest of Holdrege.
