Charlie Viers knew before the season that his Millard West team could be good.

As the season progressed, Viers’ confidence in himself and his teammates grew. The result was the school’s second state championship and some impressive postseason honors.

Viers and quarterback Tyler Seals of Bellevue West are the honorary captains of the Lincoln Journal Star Super-State football team.

Viers is joined by teammates Kohlman Adema-Schulte, Jake Herweyer and Anthony Meyers.

The all-state teams are selected based on nominations by coaches and staff observations.

“We had a bunch of good guys coming back. Halfway through, we realized we could do just about anything we needed,” said Viers. “By the playoffs, we thought we could beat every team we played. We just got more confident.”

It was no surprise to Millard West coach Kirk Peterson that Viers had such faith in his team.

“He wanted to make sure everyone knew what their job was,” Peterson said. “Earlier in the year, we decided we had to run a practice without Charlie talking because the players had become so dependant on him.

“Charlie makes all the calls and decisions and we needed to be able to function if he wasn’t there. The first time we tried it, I held up a card and practice stopped dead.

“Charlie just grinned.”

Seals, who was second-team Super-State last year, put up gaudy numbers as the Bellevue West quarterback for two years. This year, he passed for 2,909 yards, a school record, to bring his career total to 5,357, another record. He threw 60 touchdowns and completed 304 passes, both school marks.

“I have a little brother, Aaron, and he played for the same eighth-grade team I played for,” said Seals. “He jokes that he’ll take all the records from me, and I wish him good luck.”

Seals’ favorite target, Greg Hardin, also moved up from second team to first team Super-State after back-to-back seasons with 1,000 yards receiving.

“Tyler is a very heady guy and very tough,” said coach John Faiman. “The kids believe in him and look to him. He organized all the summer 7-on-7 things and was just a great team player.”

Cole Pensick of Lincoln Northeast, a Nebraska football recruit, is honored for the second time and was also second-team Super-State as a sophomore. Another Husker recruit, C.J. Zimmerer of Omaha Gross, is honored at fullback after being named to the second team last year as a linebacker.

Other repeat Super-State selections are Jordan Hale of Millard South and Tyrone Sellers of McCook, who is headed to Kansas on a football scholarship and was named the state’s Gatorade player of the year.
