Lincoln residents woke up to the first measurable snow of the season Wednesday morning.

Around 7 a.m., nine Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies were out working accidents, mostly fender-benders, according to a county dispatcher.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded to a one-vehicle rollover accident on the 27th Street Interchange of Interstate 80 right around 6 a.m., said Deputy Chief Pat Borer.

A pregnant woman was taken to the hospital, but she did not appear to be badly hurt, Borer said.

Some snow-packed areas were slick, Borer said.

There was a continued 50 percent chance of snow in the morning, followed by a chance of flurries, with a high near 31. The forecast was blustery, with a north northwest wind 21 to 24 mph decreasing to between 9 and 12 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Less than half an inch of daytime snow accumulation was expected.

Forecasters warned some areas of blowing snow might occur as winds of 25 to 30 mph were possible, with gusts up to 35 or 40 mph.

The evening was expected to be mostly cloudy, with a low around 16.

Thursday’s forecast is mostly cloudy, with a high near 30.

Friday is expected to be partly sunny, with a high near 37.

I would really like to urge people to SLOW DOWN when weather/road conditions are not ideal. Seems to me the entire route from 84th and A to Hwy 2, then Pine Lake to 27th was nothing but ice this morning. Looks like another waste of money on the part of the city (BIG SURPRISE, EH). What happened to the good old days of gravel, traction is better than some stupid white lines on dry pavement. Someone send the head of our street crews up to the Minneapolis area to learn some things about winter road treatment. "

" You all sound like either worry worts or terrible drivers. It wasn't bad at all on any of the roads. Sure... there is ice on the road... BIG DEAL. I recently moved here from Dillon, CO. This is nothing... just rain coming down and the ground temp being cold enough for it to freeze on contact. It sounds like alot of you have no clue on what ice, snow or bad conditions really are. Try changing your tires from the "slicks" you've been driving on for 3 years. Or how bout learning how to drive on ice/packed snow. It's not that hard. I reccoment everyone with younger drivers to take them out tonite to an empty parking lot or the state fair grounds parking lot. Let them get behind the wheel and play with various acceleration and breaking. Heck, even encourage them to take the car into a spin and teach them how to let go of the wheel and stick it in neutral for a second and watch the car correct itself.

Seriously people... it is common sense and nobody should be in any accident for a trace of moisture. Get a clue... "

I have an AWD car and was sliding, meaning all ice (and I was too fast-oops). I did see some city trucks circling about, but it was too little too late. The massive damage to the front end crumpled it just as it was designed to do, absorbing most of the shock of the collision, and the driver/passenger area of the vehicle looks secure, hopefully saving the occupant(s) from injury. Modern engineering has done something right - easier and less painful to repair a car than to repair people. "

I finally managed to move the car ENOUGH to drive on the grass to get moving again, then crawled to 70th and went from there. YES....I was late for work this morning. YES....I saw people in bigger vehicles than mine flying around like idiots, but I am still extremely thankful that I made it into work safely as did members of my family and my coworkers. When I left my house at 8 a.m. to drive downtown, I was shocked at how conditions had changed -- pretty much glare ice most of the way. I think the fact it was barely freezing coupled with tire traffic worsens the ice. That's a function of physics/chemistry. I actually thought the arterials were worse than the side streets. "

When are you all going to start thinking positively and realizing that there is only so much you can do? If you don't like it, leave Lincoln. I left because I could not stand the negativity and also because I felt the city had a lot of operational issues. I'm much happier up here and especially so TODAY. "

If the Department of Roads wouldn’t have put down the solution, people would be complaining that nothing was done! And when they try to be proactive, people do nothing but complain of them wasting money. The Department of Roads can tell the future just as much as any of us can. There aren’t enough workers or plows for them to conceivably be able to cover EVERY street in Lincoln within a matter of minutes. I watched the news last night and saw snow so I planned accordingly and left EARLY for work. I drove Interstate and Hwy 77 south to work. It wasn’t THAT bad. Slow down, pay attention and keep your hands on the wheel. Although I don’t enjoy driving in these conditions, I am aware of the fact that I live in Nebraska and know that it inevitable that I will have to and I am capable in driving in these conditions. I trust my driving. And I don’t have a 4WD vehicle. It’s the other people that need to SLOW DOWN, get off of your cell phone (including texting)! That will help with preventing a lot of accidents! "

I never once put my foot on the accelerator and knew my anti-lock breaks would do absolutely no good. I ended up doing a 180 and came to rest facing the other way from the direction I was heading in the the lane heading the other direction (basically facing the "right way"). As I doubled back through a parking lot to get going in the direction I needed to, another car lost control in the exact same spot -- a giant Suburban no doubt with 4WD. Another one of my friends flipped around just south of O St on 48th. He was going about 20 mph and was going straight. A GUST OF WIND caused his flip. Ice is the great equalizer when it comes to driving conditions. If the roads are untreated, even the most cautious of drivers can find themselves in unbelievable circumstances. "

Check out the updated article about the 84 reported accidents. It says that the brine solution was not applied this week because the regular day was Thanksgiving, and they only got the bridges treated with the brine solution. The Rosa Parks bridge into downtown is usually the first place to ice up in this city, and it was ice free this morning due to the brine that actually was laid down. How could they not get this done when this has been forcasted forecasted a week. I am sure most of these people in the accidents would have liked to pay the city employees a little overtime. "

" What a bunch of babies. It's December in Nebraska. WOW..snow and ice, who'd a thought. Who cares if its icy and snowy. Don't like it? Stay home or move or drive for Dept of Roads and sand your own street. Until then I guess keep whining. "

" It took me an hour to get out of town. There was traffic lined up all up and down south 70th, people in the ditches. When I got to Hwy 77 it was clear all the way to beatrice. Seems the city of lincoln could use some training on how to clear streets. What a joke their department of roads must be. The smaller towns I went through were clear as well. Why is the richest city in the state also the worst maintained? "

" At least they are trying somethign different, not everything they try is going to work, but at least it's a sign of change. Stop blaming the city because you couldn't drive your usual five miles an hour over the speed limit. It is childish, and sad. I reduced my usual speed down to 20-25 mph and had no problems whatsoever. It doesn't matter what kind of care you drive, we all have to slow down in slick road conditions. "

" 'Drive like a grandma' remark mentioned in an earlier post here makes me laugh. I'm a grandma in my 60s, and according to my hubby (who drives like a farmer, looking at the roadside sights all the time), I drive like a bat outta hell. But not on the ice! Anyway, my Grama license plates (the grandkids gave me vanity plates for Christmas last year) give me away. "

" The roads were fine. I think some people just need to learn how to drive in conditions. "

" Why does everyone think government should solve every problem?? It's December in Nebraska. We have snow and ice. Drive carefully and you won't have a problem. If you speed, drive recklessly, yak on your phone, etc., then yes, you'll probably have a problem.

You really think the city should have put ice melt on every mile of every road before 7am for less than a 1/2 inch of precipitation? Hahahahaha! "
