New music: Britney is in control on birthday release
BY MICAH MERTES / Lincoln Journal Star
- Britney Spears, “Circus”: In a surprising turn of events, Spears, who turns 27 today, is letting her music take center stage, and this album is much more in control than her recent persona would suggest. “Circus” is, in a sense, a personal statement, with Spears explaining (but not apologizing for) her bad behavior. In the infectious title track, she compares herself to a ringleader, guiding the media frenzy to her will. On “Kill the Lights,” she sings to those who would judge her, “There’s more to me than what you see / you wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.” No doubt.
Unlike last year’s bloodless “Blackout,” “Circus” sets up a nice musical backdrop for an uber-honest Spears. There likely won’t be a better album this year from a pop-star-turned-trainwreck-turned-pop-star. Grade: B
- Akon, “Freedom”: Perfectly fine R&B pop from the impossibly smooth Akon. For his third full LP, he’s mostly crooning to the ladies. Some of these songs will play at junior high dances. Others will play in dirty, greasy nightclubs. Grade: B-
