The theater in the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame will be named for longtime Lincoln Southeast basketball coach and athletic director Wally McNaught.

The Wally McNaught Theatre was unveiled Saturday as the Hall of Fame launched its $1.5 million capital campaign.

“We anticipate that we will begin to furnish the hall as soon as we get to the halfway point,” said Bob Whitehouse, president of the foundation board of directors. “We’ve already starting working schematics and we’re paying rent now.”

The Hall of Fame will be in the new Nebraska School Activities Association building at 500 Charleston St.

Whitehouse said the group has reached the $500,000 point now. He said an anonymous donor made the McNaught honor possible. A video included testimonials from Tom Osborne, Frank Solich, current Southeast basketball coach Jeff Smith and Lincoln North Star assistant athletic director Kathi Wieskamp.

“A lot of us had a vision 15 years ago when this Hall of Fame was started,” said McNaught, a former president of the board and hall inductee this year. “I certainly wouldn’t have envisioned seeing my name on anything.”
