Wednesday was a day for Lincoln Southeast teammates KK Houser and Marissa Kastanek to show their colors.

Houser sported a Purdue pullover. Kastanek wore North Carolina State garb.

A year from now, both hope to be playing for their college team of choice.

“It’s pretty exciting signing away my life for four years,” Houser said. “I was definitely ready for it.”

Wednesday was letter of intent signing day for high school seniors across the country. In Lincoln, a number of players signed with Division I schools.

- Lincoln Southwest senior Stacie Hansen signed with Drake to play volleyball.

- Lincoln Southeast senior Josh Scheffert signed to play baseball at Nebraska.

- At Lincoln Pius X, volleyball teammates Lauren Cook (UCLA) and Natalie Braun (Furman) signed letters.

- Kevin Gillick, a golfer at Pius X, signed with Denver.

- Caroline Barber of Pius X signed with Murray State’s rifle program.

Around 40 family and friends, along with coaches, attended the signing ceremony for Houser and Kastanek at the Abbott Sports Complex.

Kastanek, who committed to the Wolfpack 14 months ago, said she never wavered on her decision.

“I did all my looking before I committed so I knew exactly what I wanted,” she said. “This is pretty exciting because I never thought I’d be doing something like this.”

" Way to go girls! What deducated athletes you are! All of your hard work has paid off and now North Carolina State and Perdue will be gettin Nebraska's finest. It will be fun watching you this year....Good Luck! "

" ted - could you imagine the politics involved in playing for your dad? LoCo doesn't want to have to deal with criticism of "oh she's only playing b/c the coach is her dad". Plus - the girl wants to get out and see what else the world has to offer. It's not a slap in the face to John or the Huskers. I think she made the right choice. "

" 90% of athletes that go out of state want to return, because they are so used to getting all the attention. Nebraska has many great colleges and they should have looked to stay close. If athletes want to leave and travel great distances something is missing in their lives. Not, all for the love of the game. "

" Ok they will return. Not all kids want to stay in Nebraska. Some want to go to programs that are going to do something. And also why should thses girls go out a try new things? My god they have a free education and can do and see so much. The girls choose to go where they wanted and what felt right to them. Maybe Nebraska wasnt what was comfortable to these girls and they wanted more than they could have gotten here. Why do you people always want to down these girls and not want them to do good? Cant we all say "Hey we enjoyed the years we watched you , no go show them what came out of Nebraska." Please for the kids be happy. And is anything missing in their lifes? Dont think so they want to go and make it on their own but maybe something is missing in your kids life that they had to stay here! "

" SOME girls leave Nebraska because Nebraska as a whole has VERY limited opportunities for them especially in softball. I am sure the same applies to volleyball and basketball. The "something that's missing" for some of these talented players is that their zip code isn't 90210. If you aren't from California, Texas, Arizona or Oklahoma apparently you don't know how to play softball. I KNOW there are several girls that are looking and have gone out of state because our wonderful university that we support with our tax dollars over look these kids. How many of the girls that ARE from the Omaha and Lincoln area are actually getting REAL money to go to UNL?? I know most of the Nebraska girls are there because it is their "dream" school and the coaches take advantage of that fact. There are a lot of girls that are playing DI outside of Nebraska, 5 just signed at SDSU and mark my words SOMEONE will regret letting some of them go.
Then there are the girls playing for the Huskers that have been labeled GFPP. Good for the program players. Those that walk on and then the coaches can say "Look we have girls from Nebraska on our team." "See this year we only have one out of state player."
Everyone knows who these players are and good for them getting a chance. Sometimes these GFPP's prove everyone wrong and end up getting the money they should have gotten from the beginning. My question is this. Why do we continue to struggle with our softball program? What changes can we make to better our program? Why does Creighton get quality players then kick Nebraska all over the field? HOW does Nebraksa lose to Iowa State....ever? When will the administration realize that we have a problem with recruiting? Dr. Tom are you listening!? There is more to UNL then just football. Quality athletes are leaving because they are undervalued!
Easy to understand if your kid has gone through the recruiting process in Nebraska.
SO in answer to your question about what these kids are missing, it's called a scholarship, hellllo! Pony up Nebraska and keep the talent here!! "

" WAY TO GO "GIMMYABREAK". I hope Tom O reads this and John C. and Rhonda R. Its very sad that so much talent is going to other states, when Nebraska should reep the benefits of guiding these athletes into wonderful people and then letting them slip away. My child is playing H.S. sports right now and is playing the recruiting game, and of her top 5 colleges she is working with, not one of them are in nebraska. So Sad!!! We as a state will never gain respect from other programs if we don't see the talent in our athletes and reward them with scholarship money for the years of hard work and dicipline. "

" givemeabreak - since you know several are looking, apparently wanting to stay in state, but can't because they were overlooked, who are they so we all can call TO and suggest the program give them a hard look, thus keeping the state pride strong, establishing a strong tradition in softball, and keep our tax dollars flowing to Nebraskans "

givemeabreak wrote on November 29, 2008 12:35 pm:
" herbiehusker I don't think a call from you or me will influence anything at UNL with regards to the way things are working in the softball program at Nebraska. The changes necessary to ensure that those overlooked players are actually looked at will never take place with the current coaching staff in place. I also mentioned there were several players that were overlooked by UNL but are going to be playing for other DI colleges. I can tell you who those players are but again they will be known when they play against and beat Nebraska this coming season! Also, these same players that are heading out of state opted to do so because of the atmosphere at Nebraska that doesn't make even kids FROM Nebraska feel very welcomed or wanted. There is a pipe line that Coach Revelle has that is feeding this program but it is leaving the team less then fulfilled and I am sorry to say that I feel Coach Revelle has lost touch with the traditions of the school and this state! I know there are a LOT of people that feel this way and I believe I speak for many of them!

Herbiehusker if YOU can call TO tell him he can find out what Nebraska is missing all he has to do is check the rosters from Creighton, South Dakota State, University of Iowa or Kansas. There are many players that have left UNL and many more that never got the chance to play for the Big Red that should have gotten the chance....it'sup to the coaching staff to watch and see what they have in their own back yard BEFORE they look elsewhere. To bad they don't! "
