As the exhaustingly anticipated “Twilight” flashed across the Grand’s sold-out movie screen at 12:01 this morning, the mostly female, mostly late-teen audience came to a complete hush. Throughout the rest of the film, there would be laughing, cheering and plenty of swooning from the cacophony, but for now ... silence.

Because this is ... OMG ... finally happening.

The film adaptation of Volume 1 of Stephenie Meyer’s four-book vampire romance series (which played at hundreds of special midnight showings on Friday) could have been pummeled with all the bad reviews in the world and this crowd still wouldn’t have budged an inch. They just had to see it. As soon as possible.

But is the movie going to live up to the book?

Laura Hahn, 19: “No.”

Paige Juhnke, 19: “No.”

Lesley Dudden, 19: “No. I think that a lot of the special effects aren’t going to come off that well, and I don’t know how some of the slow parts in the book are going to work.”

Then why lose sleep over it?

“Because it has to be done,” Dudden said. “I’m excited for ‘Twilight.’ I’m just a little hesitant.”

Though neither Hahn nor Juhnke expected the flick to be mind-blowing, they certainly were in the “Twilight” spirit. Hahn was wearing a “Team Edward” shirt and Juhnke a “Team Jacob” shirt. To put this as simply as possible, in the book series, Edward is the teen vampire and object of main protagonist Bella’s love. Jacob is a teen werewolf and Bella’s romantic alternative. “Twilight” fans support either/or.

Hahn and Juhnke debated the merits of each boy before the screening.

“Edward’s too perfect for me,” Juhnke said. “I like flawed guys.”

“But I like that Edward’s not possessive but protective. Jacob is both,” Hahn said.

Do you think that ... um, you know ... with all the boys in the world who are neither vampire nor werewolf, Bella might not have some better options?

“No,” Hahn said. “Edward is the only option.”
