Lincoln seniors sign letters of intent
By the Lincoln Journal Star
Wednesday was a day for Lincoln Southeast teammates KK Houser and Marissa Kastanek to show their colors.
Houser sported a Purdue pullover. Kastanek wore North Carolina State garb.
A year from now, both hope to be playing for their college team of choice.
“It’s pretty exciting signing away my life for four years,” Houser said. “I was definitely ready for it.”
Wednesday was letter of intent signing day for high school seniors across the country. In Lincoln, a number of players signed with Division I schools.
- Lincoln Southwest senior Stacie Hansen signed with Drake to play volleyball.
- Lincoln Southeast senior Josh Scheffert signed to play baseball at Nebraska.
- At Lincoln Pius X, volleyball teammates Lauren Cook (UCLA) and Natalie Braun (Furman) signed letters.
- Kevin Gillick, a golfer at Pius X, signed with Denver.
- Caroline Barber of Pius X signed with Murray State’s rifle program.
Around 40 family and friends, along with coaches, attended the signing ceremony for Houser and Kastanek at the Abbott Sports Complex.
Kastanek, who committed to the Wolfpack 14 months ago, said she never wavered on her decision.
“I did all my looking before I committed so I knew exactly what I wanted,” she said. “This is pretty exciting because I never thought I’d be doing something like this.”

Then there are the girls playing for the Huskers that have been labeled GFPP. Good for the program players. Those that walk on and then the coaches can say "Look we have girls from Nebraska on our team." "See this year we only have one out of state player."
Everyone knows who these players are and good for them getting a chance. Sometimes these GFPP's prove everyone wrong and end up getting the money they should have gotten from the beginning. My question is this. Why do we continue to struggle with our softball program? What changes can we make to better our program? Why does Creighton get quality players then kick Nebraska all over the field? HOW does Nebraksa lose to Iowa State....ever? When will the administration realize that we have a problem with recruiting? Dr. Tom are you listening!? There is more to UNL then just football. Quality athletes are leaving because they are undervalued!
Easy to understand if your kid has gone through the recruiting process in Nebraska.
SO in answer to your question about what these kids are missing, it's called a scholarship, hellllo! Pony up Nebraska and keep the talent here!! "

Herbiehusker if YOU can call TO tell him he can find out what Nebraska is missing all he has to do is check the rosters from Creighton, South Dakota State, University of Iowa or Kansas. There are many players that have left UNL and many more that never got the chance to play for the Big Red that should have gotten the chance....it'sup to the coaching staff to watch and see what they have in their own back yard BEFORE they look elsewhere. To bad they don't! "
