GOTHENBURG — A central Nebraska grain silo that exploded after a fire is being examined to determine if it is still structurally sound.

Dawson County Emergency Manager Brian Woldt says as a precaution, officials will evaluate the structural integrity of the silo from tunnels underneath the grain elevator.

The investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire and explosion early Thursday morning at the All Points Cooperative in Gothenburg that injured one worker.

Union Pacific railroad ordered all trains passing near the grain elevator to slow to 5 mph, so that train vibrations wouldn’t disturb the silo.

All Points President Ed Foster says it’s not clear when the elevator might reopen.
