Olympic gold winner Brand dies at 85

Glen Brand, an Olympic gold medalist for whom UNO has named two of its home meets, died on Saturday in Omaha. He was 85. An Iowa native and NCAA champion at Iowa State in 1948, Brand also won the Olympic freestyle gold medal that same year at 174 pounds.

GPAC CONFERENCE: Nebraska Wesleyan leads the GPAC All-Sports standings with six of the league’s 19 sports completed. Morningside won the award last season. Fall championships went to Wesleyan (men’s and women’s cross country), Sioux Falls (football), Hastings (men’s soccer), Dordt (women’s soccer) and Northwestern (volleyball). Wesleyan has 61 points, trailed by Doane and Hastings with 57 points apiece.

WOMEN’S GOLF: Erin Sharpee has signed a letter of intent to play at Nebraska. She helped Notre Dame High School in Green Bay, Wis., to its third straight state title, and was the individual state runner-up this season.
