An inspiring story for Great American Smokeout
BY NANCY HICKS / Lincoln Journal Star
Fifteen years ago on the third Thursday in November, Joann Schaefer’s dad laid his pack of Pall Mall cigarettes on an end table and never smoked again.
He took up the challenge on the Great American Smokeout, the day set aside by the American Cancer Society to promote a healthier lifestyle without cigarettes.
That pack of cigarettes sat there, gathering dust, for eight years, when he died of causes unrelated to smoking.
He wanted the cigarettes there as a reminder of his decision to beat the nicotine addiction, according to Dr. Schaefer, now Nebraska’s chief medical officer and a spokeswoman for preventative health care.
Thursday is the 41st annual Great American Smokeout. If you want help to quit smoking, Schaefer suggests calling Nebraska’s free information and counseling service at (800) Quit-Now or (800) 784-8669.
