Attention iPhone users -- AT&T’s 3G network is available in Lincoln.

3G will allow iPhone users and AT&T subscribers with other phones that have browsers to connect to the Internet at DSL speeds, a much faster connection than the “Edge” data transmission system previously in place, said Ben Nguyen of AT&T SouthPointe.

3G also penetrates buildings far better than the previous connection, he said.

The 3G network is "ramping up" in Lincoln, according to AT&T spokeswoman Amy Grundman. She said the service is not yet available in Omaha but may get online there by the end of the year.

" It's too bad that such an unbelievable phone like the iPhone is only available to AT&T customers. I use the next best thing, the BlackBerry 8830 - and it won't hold a candle to my brothers iPhone. Every tried to use a BlackBerry with an Apple computer? PocketMac helps a little, but BlackBerry has NONE of the real world App's like the iPhone, and if they do - you cannot sync them onto your computer like you can with the iPhone. AT&T's contract with Apple was a completely bone headed move by Apple. "

" they said it would be around before thanksgiving. Thanks for beating the deadline. Did a bit of testing. Got close to 900 kbits/s on 3G and on edge near 150. Not too shabby. "

" Ummmm EVDO Rev. A for Sprint has been her for almost 6+ months and is just as fast. My HTC Touch Pro kills an Iphone any day. On an old $30 SERO plan from Sprint and it hands down beats any Plan that AT&T has to offer. "

Sprint Baby wrote on November 19, 2008 2:10 pm:
" I have been using Sprint EVDO Rev. A for the past 8 months. Just did a speed test and got 1558 kbits/s. That beats anything any other provide can come close to. If you need Speed it's too bad you haven't done your research. A Windows Mobile phone blows an Iphone away, unless you like to look pretty. "

Windows Mobile wrote on November 19, 2008 2:15 pm:
" It's too bad that people don't really understand their phones and speeds tests. Sprint has EVDO which is the same and most often faster than 3G. The majority of people use windows so why would someone get a windows mobile device. It syncs rather easy with a PC and has a ton more application development. "

" I've been using my HTC Touch Pro for about a month now and it is awesome! No way would I get an iPhone. In fact I'm entering this comment from my Touch Pro. "

Josh wrote on November 19, 2008 4:29 pm:
" I doubt the HTC or Storm enjoys the compatibility with iTunes, iCal and other Apple programs and applications that iPhones do. 3rd party applications on Apple hardware are also hands down the best in the world - I've demo'd the Storm - it's a nice PDA if you're stuck in the PC world (as most businesses are, Apple is an expensive switch to make).

Spend 30 days with Apple products at your home and office and you'll never go back, promise. Anybody that will disagree probably hasn't been exposed to what Apple has to offer. "

" My daughter's lg shine was showing 3G this morning and when I tried it on my iPhone I had no service. I thought maybe they were testing it or something, like alltel did with their digital network a year or so ago. I didn't think anymore about it until I came home and read this. I piggyback on my home wi-fi while at home, so I shut it off and turned the 3G back on. A few seconds of no service and then I got a full 3G signal. Color me pleasantly surprised because the last time I spoke with AT&T they said plans had been shelved for 3G because of their merger. "

" well, Josh, we'd love to except we are too busy working in the real world, where we can't just decide to spend 2000 on a computer or 400 on a phone that isn't compatible with 90% of the rest of the world. Ive used Mac and PC both-fixed and used at work and at home, but many don't have the luxury of telling their boss to change enterprise wide just so thier pda/phone will sync now. "

" the iphone is 200 bucks. and their cheapest mac is 600. common mistake for a windows users to think that apple is expensive, even thought, like you, they don't know the real prices. "

" Apple users make up the slightly higher price they pay. This is through bundled software, and not having to call a tech guy.

I have experience with a couple different windows mobile smart phones, both rarely synced without unneeded help.

Btw I am working in the real world, and my pc at work, and my mac at home play very nice together. Much more stable than my PC ever did with other PC's. "

Speed test wrote on November 20, 2008 8:32 am:
" Just ran a speed test on a Sprint Touch Pro from http://testmyiphone.com and it came in at 1490 Kbps. Pretty dang fast and been getting speeds like this for most the year. Can you use your iphone as a modem for your laptop for free like you can with these HTC phones? Can you right out of the box connect it to your PC and put 10 songs on it? Didn't think so. These phones can be seen as a Mass Storage device and drop files to them like it was a thumb drive as lighting speed compared to a sync feature.

Oh ya... I posted this from my phone that not only has a touch keyboard, but a hardware one as well. I can out type or text my iphone fool friends any day. "

Still waiting wrote on November 20, 2008 8:47 am:
" You still cannot shoot video with out a hack, take advantage of Bluetooth stereo or dial with a voice command and no physical keyboard.

Wait, no web browsing support for Adobe Flash, Windows Media Video or Java. No free live TV.. And there's still no removable battery.

Finally, I'd have also loved Apple to add a slot for expandable memory, but it did not.

Iphone is just a big marketing hype that millions have taken the bait for. Look at all the posters that support it!!! "

beerorkid wrote on November 20, 2008 8:53 am:
" The article makes it seem this is just about the iphone from the title. Many other phones on AT&T's network can use 3G. A friend of mine has a RAZR and his 3G icon lit up today. Kinda silly to see the bickering about which phone is better here. If you are AT&T and have a smart phone capable of 3G it was a pretty cool thing to get the faster network.

I was out yesterday and found some areas where I was getting over 1.6 mb. #g is faster than the wireless I have at work. Looks like we got it pretty good here in Lincoln. I hope things get worked out for the folks in Omaha. "

Maybe Im old fashioned... wrote on November 20, 2008 11:09 am:
" Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I use my phone to call people...and that's about it. I don't care how fast it goes as long as it doesn't drop my call. I know that for those in the business world who need to get e-mails at any time of day it's probably a life-saver to be able to get all of that on their phone...but I'm content not ALWAYS having access to the internet (I actually prefer it that way). Voices tell more than text can anyday! "

" My Iphone is great as long as i don't have to make a phone call. Even in the city limits it has problems getting reception. Get outside Lincoln, Omaha, or off the interstate and your out of luck. My girlfrinds sprint phone has reception anywere. Can't wait until my contract is up so I can get off AT&T. "

" I've had a 3G version of the RAZR (v3xx) for two years now. It's spectacular, and with a few free apps, I have Gmail, Yahoo Go, Google Maps, and a zooming web browser, just like the iphone. Free. Bout time they turned this on in Omaha/lincoln.. They've been promising it for 18+ months. "

" OK - I just called the local AT&T store off 72nd and 370 (Shadow Lake). The representative there said that they launched 3G in Lincoln first to “work out any bugs” because it was a smaller market. He said they’ve had great success with it and will switch our 3G towers on in December, although he didn’t have the exact date.

Just thought I’d update everyone. Happy holidays. "
