A fundraising committee says Grand Island has raised $470,000 to help bring the Nebraska State Fair to Grand Island in 2010.

That’s about 20 percent of the $2.5 million the Grand Island State Fair Funding Committee needs to raise by July.

Committee member Barbara Graves says she is positive the group will be able to raise the remainder by July.

The city of Grand Island needs to secure $8.5 million by July for the fair move. The $470,000 announced Monday will be added to the $6 million already secured through other means.

A state law authorized moving the fair to Grand Island by 2010. That will empty the current fairgrounds in Lincoln for development by the University of Nebraska.

" The $6 million is on paper only. It's dependent on sales tax on restaurant food and keno. Kind of hard to pay bills on promises isn't it. "

" going to be tough to secure the rest of the $2 million and the $6 mil off of sales tax/keno. those revenue streams are nearly cut in half with the present near recession.

Get ready for GI property taxes to increase!!! Yep... just like Omaha can't pay for the convention center part of the arena financing, they are increasing property taxes as well scheduled for 2010. "

" The GI folks should pass the hat in Lincoln. I'd gladly kick in $100 to be done with the fair (and ticking off the Save the Fair crowd would be a nice perk). "
