Man who fled police via attic is sentenced
By the Lincoln Journal Star
A man chased by a police dog through the attic of a Lincoln apartment complex after he twice violated a protection order last June has been sentenced to jail for it.
Wesley Haslett Jr., 33, was given 480 days and credit for 103 days he's already served at his sentencing Tuesday.
District Court Judge Jodi Nelson said the victim alleged in the protection orders that Haslett had assaulted her and threatened to kill her.
Haslett's attorney, Robert Creager, said the protection order that was violated since has been dismissed.
Haslett apologized to the court, his family who had traveled from Chicago to support him and said he was sorry for everything he did to the victim.
On June 16, Haslett went to Regency Apartments near 70th and A streets to the woman's home.
Police said when they knocked on the door, Haslett, who also was wanted for violating probation, ripped through the drywall ceiling of a south bedroom, stepped on the seat of a boy’s bicycle and boosted himself up into the attic area.
The woman who lives at the apartment let officers inside, and police and a police dog followed Haslett, 6-foot-7 and 275 pounds, into the attic.
Haslett went with police willingly after police warned they would let the dog come after him if he didn't, police said.
