The pedestrian/bicycle bridge across North 27th Street near X Street is beginning to take shape on the MoPac Trail.

The Great Plains Trails Network provided $125,000 in donations for the bridge, which is estimated to cost about $1.9 million. The city received a federal grant for $500,000, and the rest will be paid for from funds received through tax increment financing.

The bridge, which is expected to be finished by spring, is the final link in the Mopac Trail that begins near the University of Nebraska-Lincoln at 19th and Vine.

" Everyday I drive by this construction site with its three cranes of activity. I look at the massive amount of money and concrete poured into this as my vehicle hits huge potholes on 27th Street. Our town (yes, we are a town not a city until we make decisions that effect the MAJORITY of the citizens)is not fixing our basic infrasture of streets and sidewalks. People wake up and demand tax funds spent that affect majorities not minority projects. We have some of the largest potholes I have ever witnessed and it is fall not spring. Think of the size they will be by spring because the concrete and tax money is not fixing them but making a bicycle bridge! "

" MOPAC Trail!? I still remember sitting on my grandparent's front porch, 2716 Apple street, as a young boy watching the Missouri Pacific freight trains twice a day. Grandma would always get an accurate count reported two her :-)

" This is great! It sure would be nice if they would finish the trail along Salt Creek between Haymarket Park and 27th street! "

" This will be a fabulous addition to the City's already great trails network. Kudos to the City and all of the project partners on their work in securing the various grant/donation money to fund the project. I can't wait until we can use it! "

" This is great news! It is always nice to see the trails get some attention since we subsidize automobile transportation so immensely. Now if we could just do something to get more people to ride bikes, walk and take the bus, it would cost us a lot less tax money than subsidizing the automobile! "

" I recently moved from Lincoln and already miss it. FYI "up to here" I and many others gave our personal $ to fund this bridge. I paid taxes to fix the roads. Even though I won't be there to enjoy it, I think my money for the trail was well spent. "

" Up to there...thanks. I have no objection to the trail but I agree with the lousy streets. I have been asking myself is it my car or these streets? I have literally stopped the car, got out and checked the tires. Visually they looked okay..Okay to the air compressor..no//pressure is okay. Hmm...what else...I've newer struts and shocks...dang it...it has to be these streets. "

" Up to there--do what I do...I ditched the car and use my bike as my primary means of transport. As I look at this, as a bicyclists I'm gaining a great asset in this bridge. And I don't care about the streets. I think the opposite of you. Yeah, you might be in the majority, but I'm a better person because I'm not polluting, I'm saving money, and I'm not giving money to oil companies (yes I still pay taxes on a car--just not gas tax.) "

" It's easy to avoid potholes on a bike. "

" This is great! So much better than a stupid lane down the middle of a busy street. "

" Two years ago I did a poker run the GPTN set up to generate money for this project. It was a bunch of fun for a great cause. This will provide a safe way for pedestrians in a densely populated area to cross 27th street as well. It is not just benefiting folks who use the trail. "
