OMAHA — Two people remain hospitalized following a fire at a house a few blocks from downtown Omaha.

The Nebraska Medical Center reports that a 50-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman suffered burns in the Saturday morning fire. They were listed in critical condition that afternoon.

Hospital spokesman Paul Baltes said the couple's 3-year-old daughter was released Saturday afternoon after being treated for smoke inhalation.

In addition, Baltes said six people who were treated at the hospital for fire-related injuries have been released. They included two adults and three children who were in the house, as well as a neighbor who fell while running to help.

The fire at the two-apartment house was reported about 5 a.m. Saturday.

A spokesman for the Omaha Fire Department says four people had escaped the house when crews arrived. Two others had to be rescued.

Heavy smoke filled the building, forcing firefighters to conduct several searches to determine whether anyone else was inside.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire department says most of the fire was contained to the main floor. Damage is estimated at $50,000.

" The citizens of Lincoln are ALSO lucky to have a highly trained professional department. The big difference between Omaha and Lincoln Fire is staffing. Omaha has more medic units that adequately serve their population, and Lincoln could use probably two more. By the way, where is 'Ohmaha'? "
