Obama claims 2nd District electoral vote

Barack Obama may have made a little more history Friday, apparently banking a presidential electoral vote in Nebraska and running up his score.

With the early vote count completed in Douglas County, Obama grabbed a 1,260-vote lead over John McCain in the 2nd Congressional District and his supporters laid claim to one of the state’s five electoral votes.

“Today, Nebraska’s 2nd District voters added an Obamaha-shaped exclamation point to Barack Obama’s historic election,” Sen. Ben Nelson said.

“It really is a new day in America when he even picks up an electoral vote in Nebraska.”

But the results remained unofficial Friday, with almost 5,300 provisional ballots in Douglas County to be considered next week.

But those ballots, some of which will be ruled invalid, are not expected to vary much from other Douglas County results favoring Obama.

An Obama victory would rack up the first Democratic electoral vote in red-state Nebraska since 1964, when Lyndon Johnson captured the state.

And it would bump Obama’s electoral vote count to 365, far above the 270 required to win the presidency.

The metropolitan Omaha district is composed of Douglas County and portions of Sarpy County.

Here’s Friday’s unofficial 2nd District count:

Obama, 134,168.

McCain, 132,908.

McCain had led Obama by 569 votes Wednesday. But the additional count of early ballots in Douglas County added these figures to the results:

Obama, 8,434.

McCain, 6,605.

Sarpy County totals already had been completed.

The Obama campaign mounted an unprecedented field operation in Omaha, registering new voters and prompting a record outpouring of early voters.

Nebraska awards one of its five electoral votes to the winner of each of its three congressional districts. The other two votes go to the statewide victor.

It was that split-vote system that generated an exciting presidential race in the 2nd District this year, Nelson said.

“It shouldn’t be tampered with by those with partisan motives,” he said.

Republican leaders have signaled their intention to attempt to repeal the district-vote allocation in the 2009 Legislature, returning to a winner-take-all system of awarding all of Nebraska’s electoral votes to the statewide winner.

Fortunately enough of the country DID get it, and they said so, loud and clear.
It's just too bad that no matter how well Obama does, there are some who will never give him any credit, the way they will never give Clinton credit for those 8 years of peace and prosperity.
And notice when conservatives bring up past Democratic presidents, they gloss right over the booming Clinton economy, and bring up Carter. Well, how about Clintons' economy? He raised taxes on the wealthy, and raised the minimum wage, twice, and the economy soared!
How about going back further, to another democratic president? How about FDR? Another democrat who had to fix the mess republicans made of the economy, with their deregulation, and laizzes-fair economic policys.
So, here we go again, another fine mess the neo-cons have gotten us into, and even if Obama manages to put things right again, ditto-heads won't give him any credit anyway. "

" I, too am excited by Obama's extra EV from Omaha and by Nebraska's (and Maine's) unique way of allocating EVs. However, I would caution those who would like to see every state convert to this system. In most states, the state legislature is responsible for drawing the boundaries of congressional districts after the census every ten years (Iowa being an exception, where a nonpartisan commission has this responsibility). One of the two major parties controls each of the 50 state legislatures; this means that, not only would the state legislatures be able to gerrymander (draw the lines to the advantage of a party) the lines so that their party would be able to win all or most of the state's congressional districts, but they would also get to determine the winner of their state's electoral college vote, regardless of which party more of the state's citizens belong to or vote for. For example, after the 2000 election, Florida's legislature was heavily Republican. They got to draw the lines after the 2000 Census. Therefore, they created many "safe" Republican seats for the US House of Reps in spite of the fact that Dems outnumber Reps in the state by a healthy margin. Using Nebraska's method of allocating EVs by congressional district, McCain may well have taken the majority of EVs from FL in spite of the popular vote, just because of who got to draw the lines after the last census. See "How to rig an election" in The Economist, April 25, 2002, for a more detailed explanation of gerrymandering. Be careful what you wish for... John in Arkansas "

" No, John McCain would NOT be the president if all states split their votes. The whole reason behind a split vote system is so that the electoral votes cast for each state trend more closely to the actual popular vote in that given state. One could easily argue that this is how the framers intended it, and that they did NOT want a winner take all system.

That said, Obama handedly won the popular vote. So, unless serious gerrymandering occurred Obama would also win a split vote electoral college.

For the above poster that thinks the Democrats would be upset with a split vote in CA because it would allow the GOP to peal off votes...ummm, well, you need to realize it goes both ways. The democrats could then peal more votes out of Texas. The whole point is that it wouldn't have changed this election! There more tailored the allocation of votes you have the more closely the electoral vote allocation will trend toward the popular results. I think its a reasonable thing to consider.

However, Nebraskans don't be fooled. If all states did this then Nebraska would once again be entirely irrelevant as more focus would go to pealing votes off in the big states. Nebraska - because of its small size - can only be electorally relevant if it does the opposite of the big states. "

I mean, it's not like Nebraska's split EV will ever make the difference in an electoral win or lose. By the time that vote ever splits, you're in landslide territory, which is exactly what Obama did. And since the other state to split vote is a blue state, there's a nice balance built into the system as it stands. Basically, splitting the vote brings money and attention into the state that it other wouldn't get. How in the world is this a bad thing?

So you're willing to cut your nose off to silence a few voters? Really? Think of this more as a "Canary in the coal mines" sort of things. I think Republicans need to spend more time addressing their problems as a party than silencing voices. "
