OMAHA — The Iowa teenager who was abandoned under Nebraska’s safe-haven law and returned home earlier this month has since run away.

The 14-year-old girl’s grandparent guardians who live in Council Bluffs told authorities they left the girl at an Omaha hospital Oct. 7 to teach her a lesson. Authorities returned her home a few days later after the grandparents changed their minds.

Grandmother Diane Grund told KMTV that a counselor tried to help. The girl is now missing but called Grund to say she was going to Texas for a couple months.

Nebraska officials are planning a special legislative session to add an age limit to the safe-haven law. Two dozen kids, many of them teenagers, have been abandoned since the law took effect.

" If my grandparents went through the effort of traveling to another state to drop me off, I'm thinking I would feel pretty unwanted and would see this as the only option. These people who are supposed to love and care for her dropped her off at a hospital... it was probably pretty uncomfortable around the house when the state officials returned her home. "

" Here's the deal: Both "another safe teen" and "surprise" are correct- that's why these parents and caregivers need help. Re-write the law to protect infants from being dumped, but help these caregivers of older children. Now this girl is missing, presumably in Texas, but she is definitely the State's problem since she's a runaway now. "

" These parents and grandparents are pathetic!! Love your children and grandchildren and teach them and protect them!!....it's your duty or you have lost the meaning or it all!! "

" The people who "dumped" her even reported her on the run. They obviously don't care enough for her since they tried to dump her in teh first place. No wonder she ran away. Things like this is why the law needs to be change now. "

Change the law wrote on November 1, 2008 9:54 am:
" No, this is why they SHOULD change the law. The grandparents used it to "teach her a lesson", not as a last resort. What kind of lesson were they trying to teach - don't screw up or we'll kick you out of our family?! Are you serious? The law was designed to save babies and toddlers from being killed in dumpsters and allies, not as a punishment tool for teens. CHANGE THE LAW! "

" We need to change the law. it was ment for infants not for a parents way to drop off there teenage kids off for a easy way out. "

severe parental rights wrote on November 1, 2008 1:38 pm:
" When a child is dropped off under the safe haven law. Parental rights should be severed immediately. Why are we allowing these people to have their children back? If you are able to leave a child then you should no longer be their guardian, either because the child has too many problems or you not fit to be a guardian. We are now allowing these guardians to use it just as a "threat". We need to let people know that this is a last resort and there is no going back. "

STOP REPORTING wrote on November 1, 2008 1:41 pm:
" Maybe if the media stopped reporting every time this law is used, it would help slow it down. Stop giving them so much attention! "

" Don't change the law. Kids of all ages need help. Isn't Nebraska still proud of the Boys Home.. Come on, if someone needs help, it is only right and humane to be there for them. If not, then we'll only increase their problems.....no one is a throw away........ "

" If you really feel so strongly that these teens need help then become a foster parent and show the world how it's done. My guess is that you are all talk and won't back up your words with action. You just want to shoot off your mouth and just want the government to handle it. "

sherry wrote on November 13, 2008 4:53 pm:
" The law needs to protect infants but they said they were changing it to 3 days. PLEASE don't do this because postpartum depression does not always kick in that quickly. The dropoff should be ages newborn to 5. Older kids should NEVER be "dropped off" that is very damaging to them psychologically and will cause bigger issues. If you need help get counseling, if you can't afford counseling go to your church or any local church whether you are a member or not they will take up a donation to pay for counseling. There is help, you just need to ask. Better yet at these "drop off" locations have pamphlets and packets made up for people to come and take with phone numbers of how to get help. Sometimes it's just a matter of people not knowing how to get the help they need. As far as the Grandmother that used it for punishment, she needs to be charged with reckless abandonment. There was no intent to use the law, only intent to scare the child. "
