Beatrice, Doniphan-Trumbull players win golf titles
After chipping in from 40 yards to cap Monday’s opening round, Beatrice senior Elizabeth Havekost capped a state championship on Tuesday by chipping in from 15 feet off the fringe to par No. 18.
“I couldn’t believe it when it went in again,” said Havekost, whose 36-hole total of 159 was good for a three-shot victory in the Class B girls state meet at Riverside Golf Club in Grand Island.
“In the past two years, I had played well for most of the season and then shot about my worst scores at state,” Havekost added. “So it was kind of a surprise to play well at state — a nice surprise.”
Havekost, who began the day with a one-shot edge, fired a second-round 80. Beatrice teammate Sydney Moran finished tied for sixth place at 173.
Fifteenth place went to Erin Schoenbeck of Norris.
In the team race, Scottsbluff claimed its third title in six seasons. The Bearcats, who built a 20-stroke lead in the opening round, extended their advantage in Tuesday’s wet conditions.
Scottsbluff was led by fourth-place finisher Kaylee Koeppen and fifth-place finisher Alexandria Schluter.
Lemek wins Class C
Doniphan-Trumbull’s Danielle Lemek capped a perfect season by winning the Class C title at Indianhead Golf Course in Grand Island.
Lemek, a freshman, was able to match Monday’s opening-round 76 despite playing in miserable conditions at times during the final round. Her 152 total was nine strokes better than runner-up Steph Rodgers, a Syracuse sophomore.
Amy Swearer of Lincoln Lutheran shared 10th place at 182.
The team race was also a runaway. Kearney Catholic finished 36 shots ahead of runner-up Minden.
The Stars were led by Allie VenJohn, who finished ninth at 180, and McKenzie Marshall, who finished 10th.
