Norfolk — Omaha Marian became the first Class A team to win four consecutive team titles in girls state golf.

The Crusaders did it the hard way, overcoming an 11-stroke deficit after Monday’s opening round and beating Fremont in a one-hole playoff Tuesday at the Norfolk Country Club.

Both teams finished at 716, 39 shots ahead of third-place Norfolk.

“When word came of a playoff, I couldn’t believe it,’’ said Marian coach Jim Miller. “Our girls just played super in that playoff, too. We had three pars and a bogey.’’

It was Marian’s ninth overall championship, while Fremont was seeking its first state girls golf title.

McKayla Anderson of Fremont was the medalist with a two-day total of 159. The junior entered the final round tied with Nicole Mooberry of Norfolk.

“It feels really good to win the state title,’’ said Anderson, a fourth-place finisher a year ago. “To be named the best in the state — I know it’s based on a two-day tournament — but it’s the person who can come out and play the best for two days. It’s disappointing not to win the team title because we were so close.’’

Lincoln East sophomore Jacqueline O’Doherty finished two shots back of Anderson, overtaking Mooberry with a final-round 77. That was the best score by a Class A player either day of the tournament. The next best round Tuesday was Anderson’s 81.

“I think my irons were the thing that saved me,’’ O’Doherty said. “I was able to stick the ball on the greens and then two-putt for a par today. I had two birdies and that helped, too.’’

Senior Lindsay Determan of Lincoln Pius X carded a 178 to place ninth.

Lincoln Southeast finished sixth in the team standings at 793, six strokes better than seventh-place Pius X.

Lincoln Southwest was 10th at 858.
