OMAHA — The economy may be faltering on the national scene, but Nebraskans are finding some relief at the pumps.

The statewide average price of a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline dropped below $3 on Tuesday. The prices have been steadily dropping in recent weeks and AAA says the figure was at $2.98 on Tuesday. That’s about 70 cents less than a month ago, but still more than what Nebraskans were paying a year ago.

AAA says the average price of a gallon of unleaded averaged $2.81 this time last year.

" Crisis solved! Gas is going down and will never go back up again.

Now I can go out and buy a big guzzling apartment on wheels! Forget you, hybrids! "

" It is unfortunate. Now we will see less talk and action regarding alternatives. People will pick up their pace, just like before. Then when it goes up again, they will only complain. The price of gas needs to go up and stay up! A hard lesson, but a good one for the sake of our country and our children. "

" Gas is 10 cents or more cheaper outside Lincoln. It is 20 cents cheaper in Omaha. When I came to town on Sunday morning stations were 3.01 for unleaded reg. Monday morning the same station was 2.94. I am sure that they sold out and got a new cheaper supply overnite. Right "

" I travel everyday from Lincoln to Omaha and back. Gas is always 7 to 20 cents cheaper per gal. in Omaha. Is it greed from the two or three owners of the stations in Lincoln that cause that? It can't cost that much more to get gas delivered to Lincoln than Omaha. It would be nice to see the Journal investigate it themselves as AAA is never even close to the actual prices. "

" This will not cause the look for alternatives to be discontinued. This is simply an attempt to try and get the automotive industry moving. Unfortunately, loans are difficult to secure.
Plus with GM shopping for a merger not much is going to be solved by the lower gas prices.
America has been drained financially. High gas prices, a continuing effort in Iraq, a dragged economy and escalating costs in consumables has removed the buying power of the American economy. Most people are just trying to hold on right now.
Plus health care costs are going up.... No, this is an attempt for the world to stop the bleeding. "
