New in music: Record reviews and tops of the week
By staff and wire reports
New in music
- Ray Lamontagne, “Gossip in the Grain”: A cool collection of tracks that range from laconic dirt road folk to railroad blues, and everything sounds like it’s being played on dusty instruments. Plus, one song so perfect, you just have to sit back and listen in awe. That track is “You Are The Best Thing,” a horn-laden soul song in which a skinny white dude from Maine becomes Otis Redding for 4 minutes. Grade: A-
- Copeland, “You are My Sunshine”: Dreamy, richly orchestrated and totally inoffensive indie pop, with a few tracks that would fit nicely on the “Garden State” sequel’s soundtrack (Note: There is no “Garden State” sequel in the works). And wouldn’t you know it: One of Copeland’s top friends on MySpace is Zach Braff. Grade: B
- Micah Mertes
