Reality Check wrote on October 12, 2008 9:49 pm:
" The idea of moving this thing to Hastings needs to be revisited. I felt that Omaha was a much better setting because there were things to do when the girls were not playing. Hastings just doesn't have anything to offer along the lines of entertainment...or hotels. I can't get a room!!!

Take it back to Omaha, or even Lincoln. Doris Bair is plenty big enough to handle the crowds. Oh, and so everyone knows, I am not from Omaha...Columbus area. "

Counterpoint wrote on October 13, 2008 9:03 am:
" To counter your complaint - there is probably not a better softball facility out there to handle a State Championship setting than the Hastings facility. Tons of parking, great fields and plenty of rooms if you look outside the box a bit. recognized it doesn't provide the "gate" that an Omaha or Lincoln facility offers. If this it truly for the girls - maybe have them play the prelim games at Doris Bair and Championship games at the Huskers Field in Lincoln - Like football.

NSAA also needs to better promote the State Softball experience like they do the BB, VB, FB, wrestling and such with TV coverage and the likes. "

hmmm wrote on October 13, 2008 12:17 pm:
" The thing is... NSAA doesn't care about softball. Sorry but it's true. As a former player. There is never going to be the same treatment to softball programs as there will be to football basketball volleyball or wrestling. The sad fact is our sport doesn't bring in enough money to any of the schools. "

Softball Fan wrote on October 13, 2008 12:38 pm:
" Also a supporter of the idea NSSA should play the prelims at Doris Bair park and televise the Championship games held at UNL's Bolin Stadium. Compromises would have to be a single ellimination championship game; as a fan I support this trade-off to get the games (kids) some recognition and tv coverage, as a coach I might have some reservations. NSSA would also have to extend the tournament one day to have the finals on Saturday. Both small sacrifices in my opinion for the trade-off of getting fastpitch softball the recognition other sports receive. "

Truth Hurts wrote on October 13, 2008 4:35 pm:
" Nice, Poncho. Truth is...You couldn't pay me enough to stand in that guy's shoes and deal with people like you! It's a lot easier to blame the coach than to admit what's really going on there. "

Softball Fan wrote on October 14, 2008 8:54 am:
" Why doesn't the NSAA save the Grand Island parents, players and fans the humilation, the 15 minute drive and the gas money and just tell them to stay home. Let Lincoln East take there place, they will at least give
a better show in Hasting then Grand Island. "

Yellowball Fever wrote on October 14, 2008 9:02 am:
" I agree with Counterpoint, Hmmm and Softball Fan! You wouldn't even need to extend the tourney a day - just start it on Thursday and run it through Sat. AM then start the finals at 1pm, 3:30 and 6. That way, by taking the Double Elimination final game out - the team in the winners bracket still has a bit of advantage by only having to play the Championship game on Saturday while the loser's bracket team may have a game or two on Saturday morning. This can be done very easily and would really put some "luster and shine" on the Softball tourney - especially to play at Bolin. GREAT IDEA FOLKS!! Now let's see if NSAA can get it done. Heck it would be a great chance for them to show off their "new" offices (PALACE) - just north of Bolin.
I even know of someone willing to provide the first $25K to televise the event. "

" Way to go LSW. Hope the NSAA keeps the softball states in Hastings.I love the idea of offering NETV up for the finals - would do the great game it is even better for our girls/coaches who work their tail off. "

sftballplayer wrote on October 16, 2008 7:52 am:
" As a former player in a State softball championship myself, I agree that these ladies need to be recognized for their achievements. Hastings does have the BEST fields in the region, however it takes fans to bring in what NSAA wants-money. Taking away double elimination would ruin the tournament setup that softball fans know and love. Keep the tournament in Hastings and give these girls their due! "

SB Man wrote on October 16, 2008 1:14 pm:
" To Reality Check: The Hastings complex hosts the Men's Fastpitch National Tournament about every four years because it's one of the best facilities in the country, bar none, let alone the best in the state for tournaments!! That tournament consists of 72 teams!!! "

NSAA NEEDS CASH wrote on October 16, 2008 4:16 pm:
" I'm from Omaha and would love to see it move back. It makes more sense to move it to Lincoln and play it at the Bair Complex and the championship games at Bolin. If you look at past years 75% of the teams that go to State are EAST of Lincoln and 5% WEST of Seward. It's a no brainer to me but for the NSAA they just don't get it. About Hasting having the Men's Fastpitch National Tournament in Hasting...so frick'in what. It's like building a Casino in the middle of the Sandhills. It won't get the income
like it would in Omaha and Lincoln. "

Hitsrunsscore wrote on October 16, 2008 8:21 pm:
" I realize that Omaha and Lincoln will continually have the better teams all around but please do not forget that there are girls out there west of Lincoln that are very capable of competing with the big city girls. I know of a girl whose high school does not even have softball as a sport and she has excelled as a pitcher/all around player on a traveling team, even earning a MVP award at the Midwest nationals in KC. It's a shame that these girls cannot get the recognition they deserve for all the hours they put in to the sport. Softball takes a backseat to volleyball but there are many girls who prefer watch the players get after it on the diamond. "

SportsFan wrote on October 16, 2008 10:41 pm:
" Softball Fan want a nice thing to say about the Grand Island team. A little reminder, this is a high school sport involving wonderful young student-athletes. It is not the World Series so lay off with the harshness. Besides, I saw the Grand Island team compete and they played very well. They should have won the Millard North game.
As for the state tournament location, keep it at the great facility in Hastings. Very fan friendly, good parking, excellent food, and good hospitality. It is kind of upsetting when people talk about the income fact for the NSAA. High school athletic/activities are not meant to make money. High school sports provide the chance to participate in athletics and have pride in your school. Lastly, it would be great to have the championship games televised like all the other sports. The girls deserve that. "

Mike the Realist wrote on October 16, 2008 11:40 pm:
" Hastings is the ideal place for state softball for several reasons:

-- Most important is the quality of facilities. The facilities in Lincoln and Omaha are a far, far cry from what Hastings has. You want your state tournament played somewhere where quality AND quantity of facilities is not an issue, and what is in place in Hastings is something that can't be touched by either of the big boys without spreading the tournament all over either city.

-- It's great for that 95 percent of girls who are east of Lincoln, because it gets them AWAY from the Omaha/Lincoln metroplex and gives them a chance to see that there IS more to Nebraska than the area where 80 percent of the state's population resides. It's too bad this facility isn't FARTHER west, like North Platte...then they'd REALLY get to see more of the state.

-- Softball will always be a weak-sister sport compared to football and volleyball, not only because of the numbers but because of the interest. Not every school competes in softball, while pretty much every school has football and/or volleyball. Softball is also still a new sport to the high school agenda, and in time I'm sure ETV will determine that it's worth covering the finals for.

And as far as the finals format, you'd have to switch to two four-team double-elimination brackets, with bracket winners playing a one-game, winner-take-all championship if it is to be televised on ETV. Double-elimination tournaments aren't good for TV, so if you want the finals on the telly, you're going to have to change the format. "

" My team was eliminated the first day. i live in Omaha. I wanted so much to go back Thursday and Friday to watch friends on other teams to play, but wasn't able to because of the far drive. They should move it back to Omaha or even Lincoln would be fine. I love the field in Hastings, but I think fans and support is more important! "
