When the seeds for the boys state tennis tournament were released Monday, there was one major surprise in the Lincoln Southeast lineup.

The Knights will be playing without junior Seth Shimerda at No. 1 doubles in the Class A state meet Thursday and Friday in Omaha. Because of a broken foot, Shimerda has been replaced by Chad Groshans, Southeast's No. 2 singles player most of the season.

Shimerda and fellow junior Seth Garnett were the No. 1 doubles state runner-up last year and had posted a 14-4 record this fall. They won the Heartland Conference title on Oct. 3.

Even though Garnett and Groshans have not played together this fall, they're seeded seventh at No. 1 doubles. Two other Lincoln teams — Southwest's Drew Bartek and Jake Marvin and East's Zach Northey and Sam Tipton — are seeded third and sixth, respectively.

The defending state champion, Omaha Burke sophomore Jackson Withrow, is seeded first at No. 1 singles, with LSE Grant Tesmer second. Withrow is 59-0 in his high school career.

Omaha Creighton Prep is the team favorite in Class A based on the seeds, as the Junior Jays are seeded in the top three in all four divisions.

In the Class B state meet at the Nebraska Tennis Center, both Lincoln Pius X and Lincoln Christian are contenders in what appears to be a wide-open team race. Pius X is led by No. 1 doubles team of Kyle Conzemius and Garrett Sutton, the No. 1 seeds with a 27-0 record.

First-round matches begin at 8 a.m. Thursday, with continuous play through the quarterfinals on the first day. The semifinals for both classes will be at 9 a.m. Friday, with the championship matches slated for 1 p.m.
