Fremont leads Class A golf field
Fremont took an 11-stroke lead over three-time defending champion Omaha Marian after the first round of the Class A Girls State High School Golf Tournament on Monday.
McKayla Anderson led the Tigers, who have never won a state girls golf title, with a 4-over-par 78 on Monday at the Norfolk Country Club. She is tied for the individual lead with Nicole Mooberry of Norfolk. Anderson was fourth last year, and Mooberry, a three-time medalist, finished sixth a year ago.
Jacqueline O’Doherty, a sophomore from Lincoln East, is third with an 84 heading into today’s final round.
Lindsay Determan of Lincoln Pius X is tied for ninth at 92. The Thunderbolts are tied with Lincoln Southeast for seventh in the team race at 411.
Fremont leads with a 362.
Claire Mueller leads Lincoln Southeast with a 99. Chelsea Peck and Emma Mabry paced Lincoln Southwest, in 11th place in the team competition, with rounds of 100 and 101, respectively.
The top 15 individuals, including ties, earn medals in each classification.
Class B
Bidding for a third Class B team title in six years, Scottsbluff built a 20-shot lead over defending champion Beatrice in opening-round play at Riverside Golf Club in Grand Island.
In the individual race, Betsy Havekost of Beatrice will take a one-shot lead over two golfers into today’s final round. Havekost shot a 79 on Monday, capping her round by holing out on a 40-yard chip for birdie on the par-5 18th.
“It was a nice way to finish,” Havekost said.
Alexandria Schluter of Scottsbluff and McKenzie O’Connell of Sidney both shot 80s.
Class C
Doniphan-Trumbull freshman Danielle Lemek opened with a 76 to take a four-shot lead into today’s final round of the Class C tournament at Indianhead Golf Course in Grand Island.
Steph Rodgers of Syracuse is second, with Amy Swearer of Lincoln Lutheran eight shots back in third. Both Rodgers and Swearer were top-10 finishers a year ago.
Kearney Catholic, bidding for its first state title, leads Crofton by seven shots in the team competition.
