OMAHA — Nebraska Treasurer Shane Osborn plans to knock on doors and personally return more than $500,000 in unclaimed property.

Osborn will spend his Tuesday morning knocking on doors in Omaha. The door-to-door stunt is designed to raise awareness about unclaimed property.

Under state law, the state treasurer is responsible for handling unclaimed property. Examples include health claim payments, dividends, utility deposits, life insurance proceeds, wages, stocks, outstanding checks, safety deposit boxes and unused gift certificates.

" I think they do a nice job trying to return money to people, but I question why they need a storefront in the Haymarket. Surely there is a cheaper location where they could reach more people (such as a kiosk at a mall). "

" I think some people are reluctent to step forward is because they might think is't a "sting".If it looks to good to be true , it isn't? "

" Call it a stunt if you will, but this is a great example of how a elected officials should work directly for YOU.

Same goes for Bruning paying visits to the gas station gougers.

Though populist in perception, this is the way it should be. "

" stunt! everyone would be much better served if this time and effort was spent on simplifying and streamlining the process to receive monies due to someone and copying bruning is not a good thing everyone has grown tired of his stunts to grab some free new print both these guys are going down a wrong way street "

" I suppose Shane could send some of his workers out to do this work, but then he might have to pay them overtime.

And yes, it is a stunt pure and simple.

This thing seems to be right out of the Jon Bruning playbook. Jon pulls a lot of stunts too, but he can never seem to back them up in court. "

" In the days of the typewriter, the company I worked for in another state,
I would type letters way into the night and hunt for address changes trying to find the people who had return premiums and commissions due them, that they never cashed their original checks sent to them. Out of
the hundreds and hundreds every year, I would find responses to probably
a third to half. It was rewarding, because the recipients always were
so happy like they'd gotten a Christmas gift. Also that state always
had a place set up at the State Fair that helped people to check to see
if they had any money or valuables due them. "

" Put a State treasurer office at a kiosk in the mall?? Are you kidding?? Its not a stunt. Thats what one thing that the office does, is let you know you have money, you didn't know you had. People complain when people seem impersonal, and complain when they try to meet face to face, make up your mind. "

" How much easier does it need to be. 1. go to website 2. search for name 3. Press Print 4. fill out form to verify identity if name is found. 5. Mail.

That's pretty taxing stuff right there. Should they just bring it on round for all of you right to your door? "

" I'll be home most of the day tomorrow Shane (In case you were looking for me) It is nice to see government trying to work for the people for a change regardless of what some of these negative posters are saying. "
