Three separate stops by Nebraska State Patrol troopers resulted in five arrests and the seizure of 45 pounds of marijuana and 1.5 ounces of methamphetamine over the weekend.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Friday, a Grand Island trooper stopped a silver 2009 Nissan Maxima for speeding on Interstate 80 near Grand Island, said patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins. A search led to the seizure of seven pounds of marijuana from the trunk, Collins said.

The driver, Aaron Bronson, 27, and a passenger, Joscelyn Banks, 21, both of Chicago, were arrested and taken to the Hall County Jail on suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, Collins said.

On Sunday, a Lincoln trooper stopped a 1999 GMC pickup for speeding near the 56th Street interchange on Interstate 80 just before 10 a.m., Collins said. A search led to the seizure of 38 pounds of marijuana in two large duffel bags in the bed of the pickup, Collins said.

Jonathan Paulson, 59, of East New Market, Md., was arrested and taken to Lancaster County Jail on suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, she said.

A traffic stop for defective brake lights near Kearney at about 8 p.m. Sunday led to the seizure of 1.5 ounces of methamphetamine and two arrests, Collins said. A Grand Island trooper stopped a white 1992 Chevy Lumina near Coal Chute and Sweetwater Road, and a probable cause search led to the discovery of 1.5 ounces of methamphetamine in the passenger compartment, Collins said.

Driver Bernard Kersting, 37, and passenger Michael Long, 50, both of Kearney, were arrested and taken to the Buffalo County Detention Center on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, Collins said.
