A new shoe store is set to open downtown this week.

The Public, which adjoins the Black Market at 1033 O St., will open Thursday, said co-owner Jesse Flinck.

The store will offer shoes for men and women in a range of styles and prices, Flinck said.

“Lincoln is so huge, and there’s not really an all-around shoe store except in the mall,” he said.

The Public will carry some better known brands, like Palladium, Chinese Laundry and Tom’s — a company that donates one pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair purchased.

But The Public also will carry some smaller brands, with an emphasis on those that practice environmentally friendly production techniques, he said.

The Public will be set up like a library, Flinck said, with bookshelves filled with shoes and couches for people to just hang out.

There will also be a DJ booth. Local DJs are welcome to drop by and provide the shop’s soundtrack, Flinck said.

DJ Spence will DJ Thursday’s opening night reception, from 6 to 9 p.m., and Dish will cater the event, Flinck said. The Public will also give away one women’s pair of shoes and one’s men’s pair that night.

He hopes guests have a good time, and that they come back to The Public, regardless of whether they want to shop or just hang out.

“If you walk into a coffee shop, you don’t just get your coffee and leave,” he said.

“That’s what we’re trying to accomplish here.”

" A coffee shop/shoe store? Maybe I don't get it but shopping for and trying on new shoes while drinking coffee, stumbling in your stocking feet over people "hanging out" and just-anybody-off-the-street providing a soundtrack for the whole thing doesn't sound like a positive experience. I mean, I know that works for bookstores but shoe shopping isn't like book or gift shopping. Totally different frame of mind involved, you know? Good luck anyway. "

" It's the kind of above attitude that keeps Lincoln from getting any kind of modern independent stores.'what? I have to hear music or smell coffee while looking at shoes!' Also, it said local DJs can provide a soundtrack. That doesn't mean anyone off the street. Good job reading
I was unaware buying shoes needed to be a quiet, personal alone experience with no noise.
You must buy all of your shoes online.

I hope this store does very well. Jesse is a great person and I think once Willa gets in there this store will take off. "

" We have been waiting for a store like this in down town Lincoln!!!! Its an amazing idea to have a store with a welcoming environment where everyone can come in to shop. It sounds like a low-pressure atmosphere; that is so exciting! It really brings the community aspect back to Lincoln again. This is exactly what we need!! Congratulations The Public and The Black Market. I'm excited to watch your store grow and I’ll be in to buy a pair!

Peace! "

" Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see that the article is saying that they will have coffee, they are just comparing what they want the customers to do... In any case, I think this sounds like a nice twist on the usual shoe store and hope that it will be a nice place to shop for shoes! "

" ....Kents Mens shoe store is an all around shoe store with great professionals and not in a mall. Check your competition. I hope that you have a shoe shine business inside the store or outside. If you do.....I hope you keep it staffed when someone comes in for a shoe shine. Not like the Town Cobbler who acted pi*#sed off it you asked to have your shoes shined or she wasn't there. (Like the person who told me this couldn't shine them....she was the owner!) "

" Seriously...I think that your coffee must be too bitter. You missed the point of the comment. I think they are just going for a relaxed environment to hang out and buy some cool shoes. I am so glad Lincoln will FINALLY have a great shoe store downtown. The retail scene is growing so quickly downtown!! Its been much needed!! Good luck with the new store! "

" I am excited! to come check this out! businesses in this town comes and goes so quickly. Maybe it is because that people don't put any creativity in to it. I am glad that someone is trying something Local, New and Fun..... because lets be honest, that is what we all want! "
