Dear Mr. Sportsknowitall:

Do you just make up the letters that come in? H.H.

Yes.

Dear Mr. Sportsknowitall:

If you made it up how come that last letter was exactly the one I sent? H.H.

Mr. Sportsknowitall knows all, sees all.

Dear Mr. Sportsknowitall: While watching the NU volleyball team, as a healthy, American male, I have noticed a little white tag hanging from the back side of the players’ uniforms.  Are they: (a) Name tags like the ones that we used to wear on our clothes at camp? (b) Laundry tags instructing  to wash the uniform in hot/hot? (c) Cliffs Notes on “playing in the system,” (d) Telephone numbers for the benefit of those young men trying to get a date? (e) None of the above. C.B.

Pretty funny Bob. Maybe you think Mr. Sportsknowitall needs an assist these days. Actually, the real answer is something like those mattress tags that say “Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law.” Lindsay Peterson told Journal Star VB guru Todd Henrichs (also my boss) that they can’t remove the tags because that’s where the uniforms are labeled. Each players’ number is written on the tag so they can be sorted after being laundered.

Dear Mr. Sportsknowitall:

Are crop circles the product of a cereal killer? J.J.

Do you have Prince Albert in a can? Is your refrigerator running? If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a song about it? What if we never used hypothetical situations? If a mime swears does his mom wash his hands with soap?

Dear Mr. Sportsknowitall:

Can a fair catch be called on an onside kick? K.M.

Yep. You can call a fair catch on any kick. And don’t forget, you can do a free kick from anywhere you fair catch the ball. It’s really rare, but former Husker Gregg Barrios, was playing for Creighton Prep and one of his teammates fair caught an onside kick. The kicking team had had two 15-yard penalties after scoring a touchdown and was kicking from it’s 25-yard line and the kicker only got the ball to the 37. Barrios then came in the game. He put the ball on a tee and without anybody rushing him — remember it’s a free kick, kind of like a kick after a safety — and made a 53-yard field goal.

Dear Mr. Sportsknowitall:

I saw a game the other day when a team was scored on, they chose to kick off. Is that right? E.W.

It is allowed in the NFL and in high school football but not in college. Our guess is the only reason to do that is to kick the ball onsides and hope to get good field position with a recovery.
