OMAHA — Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader told Nebraskans he would not support tax subsidies for ethanol producers.

Nader said Friday in Omaha that he would not pander to the farm-rich state to get votes. He is against the subsidies.

But Nader said he will champion for family farmers.

The consumer advocate is on the ballot in 45 states and the District of Columbia. He has run for president several times, including in 2004.

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama spoke in Omaha in February. In July, Republican presidential nominee John McCain came to Ashland for a fundraiser.

Nader also said Friday that he’d have a better chance of winning if he were included in the presidential candidates’ debates.

" Nobody speaks poorly of our welfare kings. We support lots of handouts and lots of tax breaks for our poor farmers who have net worths many times that of us mere mortals. "

" Nebraska farmers have too long benefited from Ethanol subsidies. In this day of tightening our belts, ethanol production is a waste of natural resources and $$$. Time for the government checkbook to be closed on a lot of programs and, unfortunately, one of those programs is the wasteful ethanol program. I am sure the resourceful Nebraska Ag masterminds will come up with other programs to generate income that doesn't waste natural resources, namely water! "

" Nobody speaks poorly of the warren buffets of the eastern nebraska cities either. Warren does not declare a dividend so he and his "special" people living off the work of others never pay income tax. Neither does warren pay any property tax on his billions of equity. Or how about the fact he pays no sales tax when he buys another company with his protected from tax free profits. Oh,,,,I see we don't want to talk about the fact farmers pay income tax on the money they bought the farms with and then pay property tax every year, or that they pay sales tax to the cities for goods bought to install on the farm to make it more profitibal. Now who is that getting the subsidy. The CITIES THAT'S WHO. "

" Ethanol is a joke, talk about burning up resources. Hey when Washington decides to pass a laws and throw billions at an idea, it can't fail. Throw money at failed policy until it succeeds... if it ever does. "

" You Red State Nebraskans should really roll out the carpet for Ralph and treat him like a KING. Afterall, if he hadn't collected his 3% of the vote in 2004 George Bush would have lost the election. So pat him on the back and show him a good time: Ralph Nader should go down in the Republican Hall of Fame. "

" Let's make sure we don't keep the GOP in office either than, because I am tired of the tax breaks given to the big oil companies who just recently made record breaking profits. And of course now bailing out banks, wall street firms. Let's stop it all. The truth is... we need to do whatever it takes to promote alternative energy sources.....if ethanol is not the long term answer - that's fine w/ me ... but lets get started with the process of getting off fossil fuels "

" That position will get you a LOT of votes here in the corn belt states.

Read this Nebraskans....when McCain was asked about spending cuts in the most recent debate, his exact words were, "The FIRST thing I would cut, by the way, is the ethanol subsidy." "

" When was the last time that anyone in the National media have talked about illegal immigration or national sucurity? Issues that help McCain and hurt Obama are blacklisted just the same way Nader has been blacklisted. The National media treats the voting public like the "puppets, sheep and suckers" that most of you are! "

" The only reason the "poor farmers have net worths many time that of" you is look at the sheer volume of property. They probably own more that you could ever dream of. Last I checked, ownership of land, machinery etc. is all counted toward your net worth. And since when does the farmer see the profit of ethanol subsidies? I guess that since ethanol is such a waste to you, you must never fill up at the pump with the "cheaper fuel" (which I'm pretty sure contains ethanol) "

" Poor mr nader, a millionaire and gives most of it away ( imagine his tax write offs) I read somewhere that he's lived in his sister's million$+ condo for 20 years. What's with this dude? He doesn't have a snowball's chance in h-e-double hockey sticks. yet year after year there he is. His candidacy is like a screen door on a submarine. "

whatever wrote on October 12, 2008 9:21 pm:
" Nader is right on here. To Rob G. McCain has zero credibility on illegal immigration and national security. He is McAmnesty and McOpenBorders. Hardly a selling point to a large block of the Republican Party. There's no difference in the Obama and McCain approach regarding both issues. "

Leon Vaughn wrote on October 13, 2008 6:04 am:
" Ethanol costs the US taxpayer $30 for every $1 of profit earned according to Wikipedia's page for Archer Daniels Midland. It's not cleaner than oil. It may be cheaper per gallon but the gas mileage is worse. The only advantage to it is that we don't have to get it from overseas. If the oil companies would sell American oil in America we wouldn't have to buy as much of it overseas. Nader didn't lose the 2000 and 2004 elections for the Democrats. They did that all on their own. Put blame where blame belongs. So far, Nader is the only candidate who hasn't repeatedly waffled during this campaign. "
