UNK gets players from intramurals, staff
Maybe coaches should pay more attention to intramural football games. They probably should keep an eye on the trainers when they play toss on the sideline, too.
University of Nebraska-Kearney coach Darrell Morris found an answer in both places to fill some big gaps at wide receiver.
The Lopers lost a starting receiver to academics, one to injury and another quit the team a week ago.
So Corey Morris, a honorable mention all-state quarterback from Broken Bow, has stepped in and even caught a pass last week in a loss to Chadron State.
He’s projected to start for the Lopers (2-3 overall, 2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) at Colorado State-Pueblo (2-2, 1-2) today at noon.
Just a few weeks ago, Morris was playing intramural football, said Peter Yazcac, sports information director at UNK. Morris, who had walked on at UNK three years ago, had left the team after ankle surgery and was happy playing intramural flag football. But he heard there was a need and rejoined the team.
Brandon Smith, a full-time athletic trainer until a week ago, is also in uniform at wide receiver for UNK this week.
“He was on the team last year, but didn’t play much and decided to devote more time to being a trainer, taping ankles and treating injuries,” Yazcac said. “But he knew about our need at receiver and had the desire to make a commitment to football again.”
