Woman goes to jail on prostitution charge
A judge sentenced a 33-year-old Lincoln woman to six months in jail on a prostitution charge.
It was Marijo Schlegel’s fourth prostitution conviction, Lancaster County Judge Gale Pokorny said.
The woman had been given a chance in a residential drug treatment program but walked out.
“There may come a day in the future when this 33 year old, otherwise unemployed young woman, will recognize that despite her history, this community will take reasonable measures to offer help to a person who would accept the same,” Pokorny said. “But those around her cannot make that decision for her.”
And, he said, it’s obvious that day hasn’t come yet for Schlegel.
Schlegel said she left treatment because she felt like she was being punished and attacked. But she had a sponsor and was working the 12 steps. She asked for probation.
“I’m just really trying to get myself better and working really hard at it,” she said before Pokorny sentenced her to 180 days in jail.
He said on the night of May 15 Lincoln police took a complaint of a woman working as a prostitute in the area of 13th and F streets. A plainclothes officer went there and approached Schlegel. Within minutes, she had offered to sell sex for $20 and to get crack cocaine for him to buy.
