Police have arrested a 24-year-old man suspected of being involved in a serious assault Wednesday morning at 20th and G streets.

Derrick Chappell was arrested and jailed Thursday on suspicion of aiding and abetting a felony, first-degree assault, said Officer Katie Flood.

The alleged victim, a 36-year-old Greenwood man, remained in serious condition Friday morning at BryanLGH Medical Center West.

The man came to Lincoln with a 25-year-old Memphis man around 1:50 a.m. Wednesday to visit a woman in the area of 20th and G streets, Flood said.

The woman was not there, but five or six men jumped the pair, Flood said. The younger man was able to run away and hide in some bushes, but the Greenwood man was beaten.

The group was upset with the Memphis man about an argument he had had with his girlfriend, Flood said.

The Greenwood man suffered a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain and a broken nose, Flood said. He was unconscious but able to breathe on his own.
