Victoria Ayotte Brown: Palin is talk of the town
It’s rare a non-Husker story breaking Saturday would attract much notice in the interactive world; the Journal Star gets only half as many comments on weekends as on weekdays. But Sarah Palin breaks the mold. News of her surprise visit to Omaha attracted 118 published comments on JournalStar.com.
“A sign of weakness on the part of the McCain campaign,” TR said. “Having to send the VP nominee to a usually solidly red state this close to the election means they are very worried about the first district going blue. Let’s hope it does!”
Glad commented: “I’m glad Sarah Palin is coming to Nebraska. I believe she is … close to what normal people are. All the rest are just the same old politicians. We need change in Washington, and (Barack) Obama is the wrong kind of change.”
UNMC dental faculty: Cheating goes unpunished; 87 comments published.
Many commenters felt those producing and using the dental study guide weren’t cheating.
“These tests were only assisting students in learning the material better,” Recent Grad wrote. “There are years when this dental school scores in the Top 5 in national boards … you cannot cheat on national boards. This dental school still produces some of the best, if not the best, dentists in the country. If you look closely, every single school in the nation has test banks like this. It is the professor’s job and best interest to come up with new questions each year.”
“Yet another reason to avoid the dentist,” Galen said.
House defeats $700B financial markets bailout; 81 comments published.
Opinions on this story from early last week showed the public’s anger that the bailout was necessary in the first place. The stories on passage of the revised package in the House and Senate didn’t get as much notice.
“Letting Congress watch over our money is like letting a dog guard your food,” Alan commented. “Prices need to fall; bad businesses need to go bankrupt.”
Grrrr said: “No one wants to bail out these companies, but these companies are the backbone of the U.S. banking structure. Unfortunately, some sort of bailout is absolutely necessary to keep the U.S. economy from catastrophic problems. You need to understand these are not just lemonade stands!”
Letters, 10/1: Not ready for no abortions; 72 comments published.
Paul Knopp’s letter said outlawing abortions would result in a lot more children, who would need quite a few more schools, etc., so he is not ready to prohibit the practice.
“It appears your concern is strictly financial, so I guess because we are having financial difficult in our school system now we should just eliminate a few teenagers. Look at the money they are costing us. Where do you suggest we stop with this disregard for human life?” Ken asked.
Mom of 6 wrote: “The part that really irritates me is that the people who are against abortion are also against welfare, food stamps, WIC, etc. Do you not realize that sometimes people have to make that decision because they cannot afford another child. Not everyone is living in ya’ll rosy little worlds where everything comes easy. And yes, accidents happen.”
Letters, 10/2: Attacks on Palin unfair; 71 comments published.
Quite a few commenters took Doug Vandervort to task for his letter criticizing attacks on Palin.
“Who exactly is attacking Palin about her children? Anyone?” Al asked. “I haven’t even seen this pathetic excuse to buy sympathy brought up in weeks. We don’t need to criticize Palin about her children; she’s giving us daily reminders on dozens of other things for why we should not vote GOP this year.”
Hitcher wrote: “You’re right, Doug V. Partisan attacks have been the norm in politics, but the Obama campaign and his media attack dogs have turned hateful attacks and smears into an art form. When it comes to hatred, no one can match the hatred of true fanatics, be they religious zealots or political extremists such as Obama supporters.”
