Cabela's Inc., the outfitter of outdoor gear, announced a reduction in workforce of approximately 10 percent at its corporate headquarters in Sidney.

The company did not disclose the number, but spokesman Joe Arterburn said it applied only to the outfitter’s headquarters, not to the stores, and not to the company’s credit card bank, World’s Foremost Bank, headquartered in Lincoln.

The city of Sidney’s Web site shows 2,100 people working for Cabela’s in Sidney, but that includes the headquarters, a distribution center and the company’s flagship retail store.

The company said it determined to reduce staffing in selected areas  expects approximately two-thirds of the reduction to come from not filling open positions and one-third of the reduction to come from job eliminations.

Cabela’s said it is offering severance payments and outplacement assistance to those employees.

"This workforce reduction is an effort to reduce costs and improve efficiencies," said Dennis Highby, Cabela's chief executive, in a release. "While this was a difficult and challenging decision, I believe it was necessary given the macroeconomic environment we are facing. We don't expect these changes to impact customer service."

As always, the company said, it expects to hire and make adjustments in workforce as necessary at its retail stores, call centers, and distribution centers to accommodate business demand.

Coincidentally, Cabela’s advertised a job fair in Lincoln for part-time and seasonal employees on Wednesday, 2:30 to 7 p.m., at its Lincoln call center site, 4800 NW First St., Suite 201.

" Laying off 200+ people in a little town is going to have a huge impact. I used to work for this company and getting good people to move to Sidney was difficult enough. Now with layoffs it is going to be even more difficult. Of course if some of the senior management would consider taking less than their typical million dollar yearly bonus checks they might be able to keep these people employed. From a former insiders perspective there are many areas to cut long before personnel. "

" It is starting already, it will not be long before we see other companies follow suit. This is a shame, I lost my job this way once and it nearly destroyed me financially... What are people to do, I agree with Dave that the cuts should come from the executives ond upper management, lets save the people that do all the work for the littlest pay. "

" The bonus given to the executives is directly in line with the wellbeing of the company. Nobody is going to get million dollar bonuses if the company is floundering. These bonuses will take a hit as well rest assured. These cuts are a tragedy, but a necessary precaution to save the company and ultimately far more jobs than are being cut right now. This is a sacrifice for the greater good, and a sacrifice that all Cabela's Corporate employees will feel. "

" Palin's small town America...hit hard by the economic crisis her party created. When will people wake up and enact change? "

" Yeah, executive bonuses are paid according to the company's well-being. Tell that the the execs of Enron, AIG, Lehman Bros, etc. Give me break. We need to open our eyes! "

" This is NOT Palin's fault. This is not the fault of only the republicans or the democrats - it too a combined effort. When people get over their partisan bickering and fingerpointing, maybe we can get out of this mess. Unfortunately, that will be NEVER. "

" Boy James tough guess which dog you have in this fight. Unlike most I will not hide, I will be up front I am a small government capatalist. If the government would just stay out of the free market and not try and fix everything, times will be hard but will turn around. I just hope whoever gets elected will allow the bad businesses to fail and the strong to get even stronger. And do not believe a change toward socialism will be a good change. "

" No surprise! Since going corporate, Cabela's is very employee unfriendly, giving little concern to what happens to any of their hard working workers. Every day their only concern is the bottom dollar and if that means laying off or firing dedicated employees they will do it with no hesitation. Once this financial crisis is over they will have a hard time getting dedicated and knowledgable people as employees and have lost many long time customers. "

" Does this impact any state tax incentives the company may have received for job creation, which, uh, now is job elimination? "

" Enact what change? Obamas brand of change? the brand of change that will take more money out of the working americans pocket so they can be even less financially stable in a time of crisis? Taking the money that these people might otherwise spend and feed to the economy? Great plan, that should get the economy up and running. I recently met a kid who is getting paid to go to college. How? Why?, I asked him. The government is paying him because his mom is on welfare, and he openly admitted that it's not because she can't get a job, she simply won't. And why would she if she can continue to leach off of the taxdollars that Obama wants to take more of. My parents both work full time to even help me pay for college and can't afford to just pay for it. What is wrong with this picture? I say yes to change, But to the change that America actually needs! "

" As a former employee, I agree with Dave. Cabela's relocated me to Sidney and I thought I was home for good. I was shocked at the waste I saw within the company. Making suggestions to improve efficiency got me no where. I agree that the bonuses paid to management were out of line. Long story short, my job was eliminated after three years and I was unable to find another position in NE. I ended up moving....again. "

" Who is in charge of Congress? As you democrats always tell us, Bush is worthless. He is doing nothing. Barney Frank is in charge of the committe that oversees regulation on the major issues affecting the economy. The do-nothing congress the last few years has looked the other way while Wall Street burns. Both parties are completely worthless. Blaming one over the other is senseless. When will people wake up and realize that politicans do not have your interests at heart. They only care about making their big money backers happy and making sure that they keep their jobs. "

" Ok all of you people posting here are silly. As a former employee of Cabela's about 5 years ago I'd have to say that it has jack to do with the econmy and more to do with the way the company is managed. When Cabela's was a private stock company it was one of the best places in America to work. When it went public the company basicly sailed down the train tracks straight into the gutter and became one of the most toughest places to work. The level of stress there was always running so high you never knew if someone was going to flip out, go over to the gun store, and come back shooting at you or something. We had to have one former co-worker removed by state patrol, sheriffs, and city police after grabing someone and threatning to hurt him over work related stuff. Heck I my self can recall the VP of Accounting screaming and me and cussing so loud people 3 cubicals down could hear it through the phone. That place really went down the drain. I still support them simply because I love the company in terms of corprate Sidney ... man I think I'd rather go walk around in a mine field in Iraq. "
