DVDs: What's new this week; top of the charts
- “The Happening” (R): Hilariously awful in every way, this would-be eco-horror-thriller about what happens when the Earth strikes back is a new low for writer/director M. Night Shyamalan. It will be remembered as the movie in which Mark Wahlberg tries to reason with a plastic tree. Grade: D-
- “30 Rock: Season 2” (PG-13): The funniest, zippiest, wittiest show on TV just keeps getting better, as Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski and Tina Fey (you may have heard of her recently …) try to balance life, love and work on the set of a “Saturday Night Live”-esque comedy show. Grade: A
- “Don’t Mess with the Zohan” (PG-13): Well, it’s an Adam Sandler comedy. You probably already know how you’ll feel about it. Here, Sandler plays Zohan, an Israeli commando who pursues his dream of being a hair stylist in New York City. Grade: C+
- “Paranoid Park” (R): Moody, artsy filmmaker Gus Van Sant’s best pic in many a moon. Based on a young-adult novel, “Park” digs into the skate rat culture of Portland, Ore., and tracks a few months in the life of a teen boy after he makes a horrible mistake. It’s a beautifully shot, artistically wrought film about the secret lives of teens. Grade: B+
