Fremont beats Rockets for first win
By the Fremont Tribune
Charlie Simmons caught two touchdown passes Friday as host Fremont defeated Lincoln Northeast 21-6.
The victory snapped a 12-game losing streak for the Tigers. Fremont had been winless since defeating Omaha Northwest in its 2007 opener.
"It has been a struggle, but we've been telling the kids they are getting better in several areas," Fremont coach Kevin Meyer said. "Our defense played great and our special teams were pretty good. Our offense got the running game going."
Tyler Francis' 1-yard touchdown run with 7:10 left in the first quarter put Northeast ahead 6-0. It stayed that way until late in the second quarter.
A.J. Snodgrass of the Tigers recovered a fumble at the Northeast 35, and on the next play, receiver Braxton Voss took a pitch and pulled up to throw a pass to the end zone. Northeast defensive back Yusef Wade appeared to come down with an interception, but it was wrestled away by Simmons for a touchdown.
The Tigers increased their lead to 9-6 when Northeast had a punt snap go through the end zone on a punt attempt. On the third play from scrimmage following the safety, Fremont quarterback Trevor Strong hit Voss for a 54-yard touchdown.
Another Strong touchdown pass sealed the win for Fremont. On fourth-and-15 from the Northeast 25, Strong hit Simmons across the middle. He broke free and outraced the Rockets' secondary to the end zone with 9:11 left to play.
Francis was 12-for-22 passing for 162 yards but was intercepted once. The Rockets also lost three fumbles.
Porter Groves rushed for 58 yards for Northeast.
