POWER OF THE NFL
Just how popular is the NFL? The most recent national ratings show the Major League Baseball Division Series averaging a 2.9 rating, well below what NFL exhibition games produced.
MORE ON BASEBALL
I do like TBS’ coverage of the baseball playoffs. Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn has offered some good insight as a color analyst, the station is not showing a million shots of dejected fans, and no Joe Buck.
Even John Smoltz, who was in the broadcast booth for the Phillies-Brewers series, has done a good job.
However, Cal Ripken Jr., who is a studio analyst for TBS this postseason, probably better do his homework. Before Wednesday’s first game: “I think it would be an absolute shocker if Minnesota beats (Phillies pitcher Cole) Hamels.”
Yes it would. Hamels was pitching against Milwaukee, Cal.
And was that Ron Burgundy or field reporter Craig Sager at Game 1 of the Angels-Red Sox series? Sager was wearing an awful Dairy Queen-red sports jacket.
TO THE NFL
ESPN studio guru Chris Berman gave a shoutout to Grant Wistrom and Parkview High School in Missouri. The Vikings defeated Hillcrest about 10 days ago to break a 58-game losing streak that dated to October 2002. Wistrom was an assistant with the team last year.
