Man shot by officer in Gage County
BEATRICE, Neb. — A law enforcement officer shot and killed a man Sunday after a standoff in Blue Springs.
Authorities were called to a residence on the southwest side of town about 6 p.m. Saturday after a neighbor across the street reported a man armed with a handgun knocking on his or her door, Gage County Attorney Randall Ritnour said.
The man, who was not identified, was in the residence as negotiators spoke with him into the early morning hours. The man came out and fired shots shortly after 4 a.m. Officers returned fire, and the man went back inside. He was found dead in the home’s doorway about 7:15 a.m.
Ritnour said no officers were injured. He said he didn’t have information on how many shots were fired.
No one was in the home with the man at the time of the standoff.
Neither the officer nor his or her law enforcement agency was identified.
The Gage County Emergency Response team responded to the call. The team is made up of Beatrice police and Gage County Sheriff’s deputies.
The Nebraska State Patrol has been asked to investigate the shooting, Ritnour said. A grand jury also will investigate, as required by state law when a person dies while in contact with law enforcement.
Blue Springs, population 372, is 11 miles south of Beatrice in southeast Nebraska.
