" Regretfully, another life-changing injury from football. I wish this youth a complete recovery. I've personally known three other youth affected this way. One is now in his 50's and will always be confined to a wheelchair from paralysis. The second one's brain damage turned a bright young man into a person who cannot function without someone's constant guidance, and cannot comprehend or process thoughts normally. The third seemingly recovered quickly, but years later is still troubled by inability to do math well, and to remember at times, problems he never had before the injury. Sigh - my hubby played for the Huskers, and my boys and now my grandson plays, and I pray during every game. A youth sport should not be one in which a rescue unit is needed as a mascot! "

" If one tenth as many injuries happened in the library as occur in organized school sports, libraries would be declared unsafe and illegal. All the elementary and high school sports in Nebraska aren't worth this one injury, much less the carnage in total. "

" Nina and Ted. Your ignorance is humorous and ridiculous. This family need everyone's support not critisizm from uninformed people like you commenting on Derek's injury. This type of injury could have happened in a car accident. Maybe we should not allow children to ride in cars either ?!?

Keep fighting "D". "
