ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa. — Lyon County, Iowa, voters have taken the first step toward opening a new casino and resort by overwhelmingly approving the project.

Tuesday’s election found 62 percent in favor of and 38 percent opposed.

County Auditor Wayne Grooters says the 70 percent voter turnout was the highest ever for a special countywide election.

The Lyon County referendum is the first step toward an anticipated opening in 2011.

Two hundred acres of farmland near Larchwood would be transformed into a gambling and recreation hub intended to draw from the 200,000 residents in Sioux Falls area.

The casino complex would be 8 miles from Sioux Falls.

" Here we go...more dollars that could be Nebraska's will be going to Iowa. Drive the parking lot at the Horseshoe and take a look at all the Nebraska license plates lined up. If only that revenue could be staying in the state! "

" Bob, you can keep your money, you just have to win. Don't be downer, play to win. Gambling is fun. My local Casino in Vegas loves me. Plus I take home money every weekend from them. "

" They want to build another casino in a market already with flooded with Casinoes. This is a example why a state must control all forms of gambling and not allow a casino built in every county, because a small group of voters approve of it. South Sioux City is over 50 miles and already has Casinoes and South Dakota is awash with casinoes, where do they plan on attracting gamblers in a saturated market they will be stuck with the bonds to construct this and no way to pay "

" Let's build a bike trail to it so Nebraska can lose even more money to Iowa. "

" Good for them - and too bad for us. When we vacationed in Iowa, we went to the huge Meskwakie casino (about 300 miles from here) with our Iowa hosts, mainly to see its impressive tribute to the tribe's native American veterans of US wars (which was revealing and worthwhile; we learned that Navajo weren't the only code talkers in WWII, Meskwakie language was also used, and proved equally impossible for our enemies to translate). We were also surprised to see bunches of other Nebraskans there, also - a six-hour drive from home. "

" Quick Mr. Bruning file and action with the US District Court in Iowa to stop this from happening!! After all Nebraska is next to Iowa and Nebraskans will have to cross Nebraska to get to this casino! "

Scooter from the block wrote on September 24, 2008 12:42 pm:
" Trust me on this one. Iowans laugh at backward Nebraskans about many many things. Gambling being one of the big ones. The fact that it takes Nebraska more then a whole year to enact it's smoking ban. Nebraska's outragious taxes. Nebraska's pitiful state fair (that's only going to get MORE pitiful after it moves to the middle of nowhere). The general opposition to change and progression that Nebraskans have (outside of Omaha). The list goes on.

Seriously, it's time for us to grow up and be a big boy state. Gambling isn't the "devil" some Nebraskans try to make it out to be. "

" To Wondering...I think you need a map. South Sioux City is in Nebraska, so they don't have any casinos. NORTH Sioux City, which is in South Dakota, does have a few small casinos. Not sure where you are, but I live in northeast nebraska and south sioux is almost 45 miles away and I'm 2 hours north of lincoln. Oh yeah, the proposed land by rock rapids for the new casino is a good hour and a half north of sioux city as well. Not like they are all within walking distance to compete with each other. "

" When is Nebraska going to get over being "were old school" (meaning horse and buggy). Morals are great and you can have those, but if the economy continues to fail, where is the state going to get money?

Property Taxes., Oh, yea those are going under BANK OWNED. So all those property taxes are gonig to be owned by the BANK. And the FED's just just bailed out the Banks. So if you think that the Feds are going to TAX themself, your nuts.

Gas, nobody is buying gas at $3.78 per gallon. People have stoped traveling. So no pumping gas = less tax money.

As a whole, this state is made fun of by everyone. It's backwards. You all are afaid to get with the time on most issues.

If you build it, they will come. They will plug in $$$ into Slot Machines. Lay big bets on Craps and BlackJack. And think about being able to bet on the Huskers everyweek.

$$$ is what the state needs and this is a great way to make some. But, oh, I forgot we are Nebraska, adn we aer afraid to get beyond 1929. "
