Letters, 9/4: Obama our best hope
I truly am speechless. I have never in my life become teary-eyed at listening to a politician speak, but on Aug. 28 I did. There is nothing, nothing in our Democratic presidential nominee’s speech that can be denied. We have to make a change. How can we do that with someone who has voted with our current disaster of a president 90 percent of the time? John McCain a maverick? I think not.
For the first time in a long time, I am excited about this country. I am excited about all the long-forgotten possibilities we have ahead of us. Without realizing it, Americans have been in a collective depression. We’ve forgotten all the good we have done and can do. And I say thank goodness we are fortunate enough to have a fellow American who is willing to truly make a difference in how our country is run.
A vote for Barack Obama is a vote for a better, stronger, richer America.

Why do we have to lose fair?
Everyone says it’s a done deal. Why? We didn’t get any say in the matter.
We went to the Nebraska State Fair at State Fair Park and had a great time. Now why would we change a tradition that works and give away everything? Our taxes have gone for new roads, a new entrance, upgraded buildings, etc. Now to just give it to the university makes no sense to me.
Please let’s change back to something good. Leave it alone; we love it. I guess I only have one more fair to attend. I won’t be going to Grand Island, and I don’t think I’m alone.
See you at the fair one more year.

Whoa, Waverly
The policymakers of Waverly are considering a study on an overpass across the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad and U.S. 6 at the intersections of 141st and 148th streets.
Recently, I attended a gathering of Waverly residents concerned about the closing of our current crossings at those intersections. The individuals who attended discussed their opposition to the closing of those crossings and the loss of the convenience those crossings provide to the residents of the community.
I recommend that the residents of Waverly communicate with the policymakers, because they appear to be out of touch with constituents. Officials have mentioned that there is in place a controlled growth policy and that the application of that program is what will lead us into the future. My communications with landowners in and outside of the city’s limits have indicated other conclusions.
I started the Nebraska Landowners Organization as a forum to benefit the landowners of the state of Nebraska and to assist the landowners of the state in providing a resource to communicate what they believe is their best interests.
The community of Waverly deserves a comprehensive plan that benefits the landowners today just as much as the landowners tomorrow. I believe a comprehensive plan includes everyone and everything.
I believe that all current and new business on behalf of the city of Waverly should be halted forthwith, excluding the renovations of the sewage treatment plant. I do not agree with the purchase of land for George Lawson Park; I do not agree with the development of land in that location for the reasons stated.
I do not agree with the use of eminent domain to forcibly obtain property for a park. I disagree with spending money for a park without a comprehensive plan in place approved in cooperation with the landowners.
