BRIDGEPORT — Voters in western Nebraska have rejected a $7 million school bond proposal.

The Bridgeport School District proposal was defeated 632-444. The bond would have paid for a 27,000-square-foot classroom addition for fourth- and sixth-grade classes, plus an 18,000-square-foot auditorium.

In the north-central Nebraska town of O’Neill, a proposed $8.3 million school bond proposal that would have paid for an addition to the public high school was defeated by a 1,742-893 vote.

" This is why K-12's and senators were never concerned about rural Class I residents not being able to vote in their high school district. Those in town were glad rural residents couldn't vote but were still taxed. Now since LB 126, rural residents can now vote in their high school districts. However, since the K-12's have taken it upon themselves to close our rural schools, rural people are going to vote against these bonds. The same thing just happened in Malcolm and Valentine as well. The only bonds that did pass were in Elm Creek and Yutan. Neither one of these schools received a Class I building and there are no ill feelings on the rural residents. "
