Council Bluffs joins lawsuits to stop Ponca casino

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — The Council Bluffs City Council has voted to join the state of Iowa in an effort to block a proposed casino in Carter Lake.

The council voted Monday to join lawsuits filed by the states of Iowa and Nebraska. Those lawsuits challenge the National Indian Gaming Commission’s approval of a gaming ordinance submitted by the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska.

Council Bluffs officials say the casino would harm their nearby community.

Nebraska doesn’t permit gambling, but Iowa does. Under federal law, Native American tribes may offer gambling that is legal in a state where the tribe owns land.

Carter Lake is an Iowa town, but is on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River, just northeast of downtown Omaha.

" I don't see how this casino could "harm their nearby community" when they already have casinos in Co. Bluffs. All it boils down to is that it is the Indians that want to have gaming. No matter what they say it is a race issue, clear and simple! "

" This is more of Council Bluffs protecting its revenue stream from gambling. I am guessing they don't see anything from an Indian casino since Carter Lake, is not Council Bluffs. They don't want competition reducing their cofers. i don;t thin krace has much to do it from an Iowa stand point.

Omaha is contending because it is increase in infrastructure needs. If you haven't been to Carter Lake lately, you might not understand. thre haven;t been a lot of upgrades there. Adding thousands of visitors into that will put a strain on civic resource meant for Omaha/NE citizens. "
