SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — Democrat Scott Kleeb tried to gain ground against Republican Mike Johanns by criticizing his time as agriculture secretary in a debate in downtown Scottsbluff.

Kleeb sharply criticized the former governor Sunday for his positions on energy, health care, immigration and federal spending.

But Johanns said Kleeb misrepresented his views. At one point, he rehashed the old Ronald Reagan line: “There you go again.”

After the debate, Johanns said some of Kleeb’s claims had become “wreckless.”

The two are competing for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Chuck Hagel, who isn’t seeking re-election.

" It is very unfortunate that Kleeb is getting so desperate that he is now starting out right lie about Mike Johanns.

Oh, well....in the end Kleeb will lose, and go back to riding cows or whatever he was doing!! "

" Why did you decide to run against Johanns? We really could have used you taking on Smith. Now no one is running against Smith, and we're going to be stuck with him for the foreseeable future (which is bad); meanwhile, you're looking like you're out of your league running against Johanns. Just because out of state posters on Daily Kos write that they think you're good-looking doesn't mean that Nebraskans will vote for you over their known quantity of Mike Johanns. I wish you would have run against Smith! "

" That sounds like Johanns all tired slogans and never accomplishes anything except for Mike Johanns. "

" If what he is saying is not true then Johanns needs to provide facts that support it. But that won't happen because they are true. I wish people would take the time to research his career and quit just saying he is a good man. He has proved time and time again that he will jump to the side of the fence that has the greenest grass. How many times must a man quit before people take notice? I guess if we keep giving him the chance over and over again we will never find out! "

" I guess for the life of me how is it the Mr. Klebb is Lying about Mr. Johanns?
What Lie? What did he say that was wrong? Mr. Johanns never said what it was that was wrong and set the facts straight. I guess stealing phrases from a deceased president is OK.

Scott Klebb was correct in what he said and Mr. Johanns can not accept it.
Well I guess the truth hurts.

I guess some that posted here have their heads in sand and have not read or read what Mr. Johanns has not done for this state only done for himself.

It is a sorry state that people in the state of Nebraska still think Mr. Johanns is the answer, When he has had a chance to prove himself only to quit time and time Again!

Ask a firefighter if they think Mr. Johanns is a good Man! He was just a great guy that they never got a raise in over two years. Ask Mr. Johanns if that was not true or anything else for that matter. So where is the LIE? "

" Kleeb need to get name recognition. People know Johanns even though he is the biggest quiter in the state. "

" How can anyone take Kleeb seriously as a candidate for any office? The man has no credentials and/or proven track record to stand on. His irresponsibility and immaturity is demonstrated by his losing his driver's license, and then offering some lame excuse. Johanns is no ball of fire, but he's the lesser of two evils. "

" Don't have to lie about Johanns. His past record should make anybody think twice about voting for him. "

" How can anybody take Mr. Johanns Seriously as a candidate?

So Mr. Johanns has name recognition, So that makes a good candidate?

I guess we are Doomed if that is all it takes, So VP Sarah Palin should not even be considered if that is case. Or Mr. Obama for that matter as he does not name recognition either, outside of Illinois.

Why is it that nobody has even looked at where they stand of issues or seen what their track records are from past issues. What has Mr. Johanns even brought to table as things he accomplished? Only grand standing on things that he says are falsehoods but no evidence to support his claims.

Has anybody questioned him on the 20 million he cut from the farm program under his leadership, all the while he was traveling around the country using 19 million for travel expenses. This is the man you want to send to Washington because he has name recognition? God Help us as if that is what it takes. "

" Journal Star's coverage of this debate was woefully unprofessional and totally inadequate. There were three participants in this debate, not two. Yet the Green Party candidate (Steve Larrick) was mentioned only once in the article--at the very end!--and he wasn't mentioned at all in the online version. Any student in a middle school journalism class could have done better. "

Do it every day from now to the election, thats over $2500.00. Do it every day from now to the election I'll kick in a $500.00 bonus. "

" Johanns has no new ideas and is running on the idea of "change" while saying "pay no attention to that elephant under the table". He has flip flopped on so many issues and claimed to have done things he hasn't. He actively worked to stop Operation Vanguard, he told the President to veto the Farm Bill because it closed a loophole in the first version (he wanted to protect foreign companies that avoid taxes through tax havens, while US companied had to pay), he hurt the mental health system in this state, he shut down FSA offices while letting his employees waste nearly $20 Million in JUST ONE YEAR on travel to "conventions" (like one on Mississippi crayfish at the Surfers Paradise in Australia, untold numbers of trips to Las Vegas, a conference on Congress in HAWAII, just to name a few).....yep, we who support Kleeb like what's "shiny". Whatever. Johanns is horrid and has quit every job he's had, not even giving Farmers a 2 weeks notice in the last job, all to advance his own personal life agenda. Kleeb has new, better ideas, is a REAL change, and will serve us well. Johanns is more of the same and his proven it with his record and his rhetoric. You can't expecting anything to improve if you keep voting the same failed politicians into office over and over again!! "

T Jefferson wrote on September 9, 2008 8:08 am:
" Johanns had held office at multiple levels. Kleeb has never had a full time permanent job. Dude rancher, part time teacher. Frankly I am not terribly pleased with the options here. Kleeb should have waited to run until he had a little more experience. I think his youth shows through his irresponsible actions (driving) and immature public persona and campaign. Johanns has served at every level of government. He has the experience to serve Nebraska best in this case. "

" OMG!!! Johanns quoted Ronald Reagan!!! He DEFINITELY has my vote now!

Who cares that Kleeb was actually right and that Johanns has quit many different offices and positions in the pursuit of higher title?

As long as Johanns continues to quote Dutch, all is right in my world! "

Vague wrote on September 9, 2008 10:17 am:
" What a great article! It says that Kleeb is criticizing Johanns record and that Johanns thinks Kleeb is being misleading. What a shocker! Two opposing candidates disagreeing on the record?? Who would have predicted that?

We don't need to know what Kleeb’s criticisms actually are or if they are arguably valid… That would just be too much to ask of a news source.

Way to inform the voter LJS!! "

" Since I didn't see any other reporting about this debate, I didn't learn anything from this article. I like Kleeb and Palin. Can I just vote these two for president/vice president and ignore the rest? "
