** NEBRASKA-OMAHA 49, NEBRASKA-KEARNEY 21: Leading just 7-0 at halftime, Nebraska-Omaha rolled up 35 points in the third quarter and the Mavericks posted a 49-21 win over Nebraska-Kearney before 7,316 at Caniglia Field and a statewide audience on Nebraska ETV.
Quarterback Zach Miller threw for 175 yards on just five completions and the Bishop Neumann product rushed nine times for 120 yards.
Miller had a 51-yard TD scamper and tossed a 57-yard scoring pass to Mike Higgins in the third quarter. Brian McNeill scored on 1- and 52-yard runs and John McArdle scored on a 2-yard run as UNO built a 42-0 lead.
Saturday’s game was the season-opener for UNO, which outgained UNK 466-381 and forced five turnovers.
The Lopers fell to 0-2.
** HASTINGS 17, DOANE 7: Mike Cardenas came up with three turnovers (two fumble recoveries and an interception) as the host Broncos improved to 2-0 with a win in the GPAC opener.
Dayton Edwards connected twice with David Chochon on TD passes for Hastings, which built a 17-0 lead. Nick Grummert led the Broncos on the ground with 135 yards on 31 carries.
Doane’s lone score came on a 38-yard pass from J.R. Artozqui to Antony Ritton.
** PITTSBURG STATE 38, CHADRON STATE 31: Quarterback Mark Smith scored on a 61-yard run with 1:45 to play, breaking a 31-31 tie in the match-up of Division II nationally-ranked opponents in Chadron. Joe Mclain completed a Chadron State record 38 passes but the Eagles lost for the first time in 25 regular-season games.
** WAYNE STATE 28, MINNESOTA STATE MOORHEAD 21: Silas Fluellen threw for 315 yards and four touchdowns as host Wayne State improved to 2-0 for the first time since 1995.
** JAMESTOWN 47, PERU STATE 20: The Jimmies won their home opener in Jamestown, N.D., as Josh Kittell threw for more than 300 yards and the running game racked up 196 yards. John Noojin had 74 yards rushing and scored on runs of 27 and 11 yards for Peru State.
** DANA 17, BRIAR CLIFF 15: Trailing 15-3 to open the fourth quarter, Dana’s Marcus Sladek threw for one TD and ran for another as the Vikings had to rally despite outgaining the Chargers 508-201. Sladek threw for 432 yards.
** NORTHWESTERN 42, DORDT 0: The Red Raiders ruined the varsity debut of Dordt’s football team. Northwestern outgained the Defenders 512-118.
** MORNINGSIDE 31, DAKOTA WESLEYAN 7: Ian Gilworth threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns, highlighted by an 81-yard bomb to Beau Kildow, as the Mustangs opened with a win at home.
** MIDLAND LUTHERAN 50, CONCORDIA 14: The Warriors opened with a convincing win on the road.
