Today’s families have many challenges and struggles.

Capitol View Seventh-day Adventist Church knows about struggle.

The big brown church at 17th and A streets was built in 1901. The building shows its age. Its congregation also has aged; children have grown up and moved on.

But the church, like many families, has endured.

Friday and next Saturday,  Capitol View Church, 1640 A St., will host a free two-day parenting seminar featuring well-known licensed mental health counselor Gary Parker and his wife, Donna Parker, of Iowa. The couple recently presented a seminar in Texas. Parts of that program can be seen online at www.3abn.org.

The featured presentation, “Child of Rage,” will be held from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 13. The Parkers will address the behavioral issues children face as well as a variety of mental health issues including reactive attachment disorders, attention deficit disorder, post traumatic stress, obsessive compulsiveness, bipolar disorder  and Tourettes Syndrome.

Other sessions will include “Yours, Mine and Ours,” regarding divorce, children and the blended family, and “eXtreme Parenting,” concerning the parenting of teens.

The seminar is recommended for adults only; however, the church will provide free activities for children ages 3 to 13 during the seminar.

And children and their parents are invited to the Saturday morning presentation “God’s Families.”

The seminar schedule is as follows:

* “Yours Mine and Ours,” 7-9 p.m. Friday.

* “eXtreme Parenting,” 9:30-10:30 a.m. Sept. 13.

* “God’s Families,” 10:30-noon Sept. 13.

* “Child of Rage,” 2-5 p.m. Sept. 13, with questions and answers from 5-5:30 p.m.

The two-day seminar is free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be collected.
