Link backs blast Omaha South
By GENE COTTER for the Lincoln Journal Star
Aside from a power outage and a clock malfunction, not much else went wrong for Lincoln High School on Friday night.
It was the first time in a long time.
Links senior Gabe Smail racked up 127 yards and three touchdowns and Nate Tromblee ran for 71 yards and two more scores as LHS snapped a 16-game losing streak with a 48-13 win over Omaha South at Beechner Field.
“We’ve just started playing more as a team. Playing for each other,” Smail said. “Everybody’s doing their job. It all just came together today.”
The Links (1-1) took the opening kickoff and wasted little time in establishing control over the Packers (0-2).
Smail carried the load, opening the scoring on a 22-yard run. He hauled two Omaha South defenders with him for the last several yards into the end zone. A 3-yard run late in the second quarter followed a 15-yard scoring strike from Dylan Flinn to Matt Robertson as Lincoln High headed into haltime up 21-7.
The Packers’ lone first-half score came when quarterback Jordan Frezell took the snap on a fake punt and raced 55 yards for a score. Frezell added South’s other score late in the third quarter with the Packers trailing 35-7.
Aside from that and a nearly intercepted pass with time running short in the game that resulted in a 63-yard completion for the Packers, South got nothing going.
Minus that pass and a 55-yard Frezell run and South amassed just 159 yards on its other 48 snaps.
The Links, meanwhile, rolled to 404 yards on 55 snaps.
“Our linebackers really stepped up big time,” Smail said. “We’re just trying not to give up. If we have a bad day we just try to come back and work hard.
LHS added touchdown runs of 37 and 9 yards from Tromblee, a 5-yard Smail score and a 14-yard run from sophomore James Hall.
Frezell led the Packers with 93 yards rushing on 13 carries. He threw for another 68 yards.
