Southwest earns split with Papillion-La Vista South
By Lori Griffin / Lincoln Journal Star
Despite losing a no-hit bid in the bottom of the seventh inning, Lincoln Southwest junior Becca Changstrom kept her composure Thursday, and the No. 8 Silver Hawks held on for a 5-2 win against Papillion-La Vista South in Papillion.
The Titans won the first game of the doubleheader 4-1.
In the nightcap, Southwest grabbed a 5-0 lead before No. 4 Papio South started a rally.
“She was throwing really hard early in the game and was in command of her pitches,” Southwest coach Mark Watt said. “Papio South made the adjustments they needed to and hit the ball, but Becca took what they offered and made a difference of her own.”
Changstrom struck out 11 and gave up just three hits.
Freshman Liz Dike had three hits, while sophomore transfer Alex Schmidt added two hits and scored twice for Southwest.
“This is an excellent contest to find out where our weaknesses and strengths are and Papillion South did a nice job,” Watt said.
“Before the second game we talked about playing strong and we came out and scored three runs in the first inning,” Watt said. “I was pleased that they didn’t panic (in the seventh) and finished out the game.”
Changstrom and sophomore Mallory Noakes each had two hits in the first game.

Monarch sophomore Karissa Hovinga threw a three-hitter, striking out 10, while Erin Kempf was 2-for-4 at the plate.
“For the first time out, we didn’t do too bad,” East coach Butch McLaren said. “We had a game plan and we did not follow the game plan at all.”
Junior Jamie Zillig led the Spartans with two hits and scored the only run on a sacrifice fly by Katelyn Peterson.
